    Xigmatek HDT S1283 CPU Cooler

    XIGMATEK HDT-S1283

Have read quiet a bit about the new HDT Coolers besting the old established coolers., so I thought I'd give it a try.

HDT is nowt to do with high definition it's stands for Heat-pipe Direct Touch.
It means that the heatpipes are in direct contact with the CPU as here:-

Xigmatek are a relatively new name , but are rapidly making reputation for good , great value coolers

    Fan & Mounting

    Fan

    The fan spec is:-
Adda 1212DX Ultra Low Hypro Bearing
    800-1500Rpm
    72.1-99.6Cfm
    2.6-4.8 mmH2O
    Noise Level 20~32 dBA
    4 Pin with PWM

Adda 1212DX Ultra Low Hypro Bearing
    800-1500Rpm
    72.1-99.6Chm
    2.6-4.8 mmH2O
    Noise Level 20~32 dBA
    4 Pin with PWM

Fan mounting is by 4 vibration free rubber mounts :-

You can see a slot in the left side through which a fin goes to secure the mount to the block :-

The other end is just pulled through the fan mounting holes. I found it's better to fasten them onto the fan 1st making sure that the slot is aligned , then mounting to block after ythat's been mounted on mobo.

I've not tried it in a case, but I like the system. Other fans can be mounted including closed fans :-
Here I've mounted my favourite fan Yate Loon 120mm D12SH-12 - 2200 RPM

Above I'm using a pack of Rubber Screws - Closed Chassis Fan Mounts (Vibration Isolators) Their thin & can be pulled through between the blades & fastened as shown.

    Tower & Mounting

Looking at the mounting method and fittings I had a real case od deja vu. It wasn't until I rediscoivered this thread OCZ Vendetta 2 Exposed Heatpipe Base Heatsink Review that I realised , if you look at the bottom picture in that link you will see the fittings etc., are identical , right down to the sachet of thermal paste. Even the heatsink base is the same. I think this is definitely a case of the same manufacturer
    The Heatsink:-
Mounted Weight including Fan = 600Gms.

Mounting Feet & screws , push pins removed, by pulling & twisting.

    Securing Mounting Legs:-
Easy screw each ppair of legs to block, using provided bolts.

My biggest gripe at this cooler are the inclusion of the dreaded push pins, of stock cooler fame. Whilst they do enable quick insertion without having to remove the motherboard from the case, I find that their life is pretty short & they fail after 2 or 3 mountings and removal. Given that this heatsink is 600g I much prefer to use a bolt thru kit.

I'm using the Thermalright 775 Bolt Thru Kit, these are pretty cheap around £4~5.

There is a Xigmatek Crossbow I7751 but am still waiting a reply ffrom Xigmatek DE about their availability. I have seen that they are been given away poohball Tech Power Up

In a way though I quiet like the option that Xigmatek give. This is a relatively low cost cooler, the base kit give the option of a quick mounting with push pins. If you are an enthusiast and want better mounting a bolt thru kit, at a relatively low £, is an option, sorted

    Testing

    CPU: E8400 wolfdale Vid 1.1125v
    Memory: CellShock PC3-14400 (DDR3-1800) 2GB DDR3
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X48T- DQ6

Note: Temperature Software. Everest & Coretemp have had the TjMax adjusted to 95C which is the valuer used for Realtemp. Wolfdale sensors are designed to monitor max temps. Idle temops tend to be somewhat inaccurate.

    1) 3.750 7.5x500 @1:1.66 1665Mhz 7,7,7,12 Vcore = 1.38125v

    Per CoreTemp Log Average = Core 0 68C Core1 68C

    2) Settings as 1) above Fan switched to Yate Loon D12SH-12
    Air Flow: 88 CFM
    Fan Speed: 2200 RPM
    Noise Level: 40 dBA
    Current: 0.30 Amps
    Yate Loon DC FAN SERIES

    Per CoreTemp Log Average = Core0 63C Core1 63C

    3) As 2) above + Paired with Thermalright Inferno FX-10 Heatsink

    CoreTemp Log Average = Core0 52C Core1 52C

Here we see a different story to the previous tests. Other than the addition of the Thermalright Inferno FX-10 Heatsink Itself we have may have sorted an issue caused by the Thermalright 775 Bolt Thru Kit. Normally the mounting pillar protrudes slightly through the motherboard

By adding the FX-10 Backplate we have removed this protrusion so makeng better contact between the Xigmatek heatsink & CPU. So if you plan on using the thermalright bolt thru I'd advvise filing down the pillars so that they fit flush with the mobo . It's probably 2~3mm that want to come off. Ideally best solution would be to get the Xigmatek Crossbow I7751

    4) As 3) above 4,000 7.5--> 8x500 = 4,000 @1:1.66 1665Mhz 7,7,7,12 Vcore = 1.3875v

    CoreTemp Log Average = Core0 53C Core1 53C

    Conclusion

    Performance
After the eliminating the issue caused by the Thermalright Bolt Thru Kit. The cooler performs well.
    Value

At £22.77 retail compared to say £38.18 (excluding Fan) for Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme value is outstanding. You could buy the S1283 + the Thermalright IFX-10 and still have change
    Ease of setup and use
Admittedly I did this review barebones , so can't comment on ease of mounting in case with pushpins, all went very well and I like the rubber fan mountings. Having struggled in the past with thermalright wires coming detached , I think this method superior.

    Pros
    Price
Anti Vibration Fan Mounting mounting. Also handles Closed fans.
    Quiet good quality PWM Fan
Delivers good performance whilst been a little lighter than other coolers
HDT Heatpipes do seem to provide a bit extra
Decent kit - Thermal paste & fan to molex adapter included.
    Multi Platform

    Cons
Push Pins - I hate them , but a bolt thru kit option , keeps £ down whilst giving enthusiasts what they want.
Fragility - Whilst testing the top cooling fin came away. I was able to push it back on, I'm not sure how robust it would be long term

Nice review Supershank! Good bang for the buck, although i would not let my CPU go up in to the 70+ range, it would probably be much better with proper pressure even without the IFX 10; i think it would be good for low to medium overclocks, let's say a 3.4 GHz Dual core or a 3.00 GHz Quad.
    Do you concur?

Yep very goof bang for the buck, looks even better after adding my 4th test

    4) As 3) above 4,000 7.5--> 8x500 = 4,000 @1:1.66 1665Mhz 7,7,7,12 Vcore = 1.3875v

    CoreTemp Log Average = Core0 53C Core1 53C

Which isn't to shabby and I think puts it in the medium to good

although i would not let my CPU go up in to the 70+ range,
Well it's the risks we take to bring you guys the truth I'ts a peak caught on Realtemp. the average for that run was 63C which is close to my 65C average maximum.

    Sorry can't hear you
Which do you mean the shipping one or the loony ??
The shipping one is very quiet. I had the loony just running max , but it does scale down very well to 7v , just has a bit more poke when needed , as the test proved.

I only use those loons in my case Lian-Li V2000B+ where I have 10 , controlled automatically by a T-Balancer.
