Asus Rampage III Formula Living Review

Asus Rampage III Formula Living Review.

Every so often, products are announced that cause a little bit of a stir, forums chatter, blogs report and sites speculates, but then things go quiet until the release day and then all hell breaks loose. We have a feeling that today's review subject will be one such product. We have been lucky enough to bag one of the most anticipated boards of 2010, ladies and gentlemen, we give you the Asus Rampage III Formula!

The RIIIF as we'll call it from here on in, sits second from the top of of Asus's range of enthusiast gaming/overclocking X58 based motherboards, just below the Rampage III Extreme and just above the Rampage III Gene (albeit a different form factor). It is fully laden with features, all of which we'll cover later in the review, including some rather nice overclocking tools, advanced power circuitry and a comprehensive BIOS.

Unfortunately after some initial confusion the RIIIF isn't going to be released in the U.K. or some E.U countries. Price isn't confirmed but we expect it to retail on the U.S. around $100 less then the Extreme, pitching it about $280. As soon as we know more, we will let you know.

So, is the Rampage III Formula the perfect enthusiast board? Read on to find out...

    The Packaging

    The Packaging.

The RIIIF comes in the ROG brand colours and very attractive it is too!

    Front.

Inside Flap and window - The front is in fact a flap, velcro fastened to the box. Lifting the flap shows further information on the motherboard.

There's also a window, through which the first glimpse of the board can be seen.

The Rear - If you want some more reading, the rear of the box provides it.

Opening the box there are two black boxes, a tray that keeps the motherboard secure and the second containing the accessories.

The accessories tray looks to be quite full of goodies, we'll have a closer look later.

The motherboard a closer look. Expansion slots.

The Motherboard, A Closer Look - Part 1.

    Expansion slots
    From the top:
    • PCI-Express x1 Black. PCIEX1_1
    • PCI-Express x16 Red. PCIEX16_1
    • PCI-Express x16 Red. PCIEX16_2
    • PCI-Express x1 Black. PCIEX1_2
    • PCI-Express x16 Red. PCIEX16_3
    • PCI Slot. Black. PCI1
Slots 16_1 and slots 16_3 are both full bandwidth x16 and PCIEX16_2 is x8. At least if your running x2 Crossfire or SLI, there will be enough space between the cards so the card in slot PCIEX16_1 won't have a restricted intake. It does mean a longer bridge than normal, but thankfully Asus have provided them.

So running triple SLI or Crossfire, the bandwidth is x16, x8, x16.

Although the RIIIF has a x16 slot less than it's AMD equivalent the Asus Crosshair IV, the multi graphics card options are the same, using double width cards. Unlike the Crosshair IV however the RIIIF can run SLI.

    A closer look at the headers and chips, from the bottom left moving clockwise;

OC Station Header - Next to the USB 10 and 11 Header, is the header for the OC Station. This is an eight pin connection for the optional Asus OC Station, and is compatible with all recent Asus ROG boards and costs around £98.

To see more about the OC Station, see No mess, no fuss. Serious overclocking made serious easy!

Moving along, there are two fan headers, CHANNEL_FAN3 and OPT_FAN2 - Both these fans are four pin PWM capable. OPT_FAN2 has an extra feature, the two pins immediately to the left of the OPT_FAN2 form a header for a thermal sensor cable that can be used to control the fan. We'll see more of this in software, ASUS Fan Xpert and the BIOS options later on. There are a total of three OPT_FAN headers on the board. The biggest downside is that no thermal cables are provided.

Next is the 1394 Header and SPDIF Out.

Moving round the corner, we have the RealTek ALC889 sound chip.

Between the first two full length PCIE slots are a number of chips - Centre is the ICS Clock generator and on the right is the JMicron JM363 SATA II controller.

Moving back to the boards edge, the large chip to the left is the Winbond W83667HG-A chip which provides I/O interface controls as well as monitoring capabilities. To the right the VIA VT6315N, is the 1394 host controller. Networking is provided by the Intel 82567V Gigabit Ethernet Controller, the chip on the right.

The motherboard a closer look. The Southbridge.

The Motherboard, A Closer Look - Part 2.

The Southbridge heat sink cover ships with a protective clear plastic film which you remove before use. The size and finish of it are striking!

The short side of the board is packed with headers as we saw when looking at the expansion ports section above. The pair of black headers are USB ports 9~10 and 7~8. To the right of them are a pair of BIOS sockets.

The BIOS sockets - One of the board's key features, normally dual BIOS gives better security in the event of flash failure or corruption. Asus have improved on this and enhanced the features, this means that you can now have two different BIOS versions and can switch from one to the other, we'll see more of this new feature later.

The Clear CMOS jumper can be seen behind BIOS chip one. Each socket has a BIOS LED next to it, so when the board is powered up we can see which chip is in operation.

A closer look in case you want to order spares .

The chips are removable, which is great.

A close up of the BIOS chip.

The usual large and small iROG chips are partially obscured by the Southbridge heat sink, the small one under the Asus logo, the larger to the right, on the corner of the SB cover. These chips control the Republic of Gamers features such as overclocking via hardware.

Moving along the edge of the board, towards the corner is the another fan header, CHA_FAN2 and the case connection header.

Right on the corner is a button, not to be confused with the GO button, this is the BIOS switch, enabling switching between chips.

SATA Ports - Moving round the corner, we have eight SATA ports. The six black are SATA II 3GB/S ports supported by the Intel ICH10R controller with support for RAID 0,1,5,10.

The two Red ports are SATA III 6GB/S ports supported by the Marvell 9128 PCIe SATA6Gb/s controller, which can be seen just behind. It's slightly left of the RED ports and overhung by the Southbridge cover.

Adjacent to the end of the RAM slots are four large Chokes for the 2 Phase NB and Memory power control, the Go button can also be seen here - Pressing this before post enables MemOK ! to run. This will allow the board to start whatever the fault with your RAM. Pressing the button when running will enable the loading of the pre-set Go profile, enabling temporary overclocking.

The motherboard a closer look - Part 3

The Motherboard, A Closer Look - Part 3.

The RAM slots are equipped with the usual ROG configuration, a clip at one end and a slot at the other, unlike the more conventional two clip approach on other DDR3 boards. In the top left corner the Fan header is OPT_FAN3 again with the temperature header OPT_TEMP3, it's ideally situated to serve a ram cooler, especially if you tape a thermal sensor lead to the RAM. The fan header to the right of the 24 PIN power header is the CHA_FAN1.

QPI LL Switch - The black jumper against the RAM slots is the QPI_LL_Switch, this prevents the QPI voltage dropping too much, similar to Load-Line Calibration.

Q Reset Button - In front of the QPI Jumper is the Q reset button, this button removes power to the CPU by temporarily stopping the PSU, to help the CPU recover from a frozen condition using LN2.

To the right of the Power header are the voltage monitoring points. These don't have terminals to allow constant monitoring as found on the Rampage III Extreme, but are never the less, highly welcome.

    LN2 Mode Jumper -
Located just above the CPU voltage measuring point. Enabling this, with the jumper to the right (pins 2&3), helps prevent cold boot issues during POST, when using extreme cooling.

PWR_FAN - The third fan header in this section, located just round the corner from the board on the right.

The power buttons - The location of the power buttons on the RIIIF is good and much preferable to the Crosshair IV as they are much more accessible when inside a case.

The motherboard a closer look - Part 4

The Motherboard, A Closer Look - Part 4.

The board has a supplemental Power connector, seen at the top left below which is a four pin molex header called the EZ Connector. Asus recommend connecting this if using multiple graphics cards.

    CPU Area.

VRM area and VRM Test Header - CHL chip.

A closer look at the chunky chokes.

    The fan headers - CPU_FAN and OPT_FAN1.

    Another view of the headers.

NEC USB3 Chip - NEC D720200 USB3 Controller chip. Located behind the Rear Panel LAN connector, second from left in the first picture.

    Voltminder LED
    - There are a series of these LEDs around the board. Their purpose is to show the user, at a glance, what voltage the component is using. Like traffic lights, it's a three colour code:
    • Green = OK.
    • Yellow = High.
    • Red = Crazy.
Shown below are the CPU LEDs - Other components covered are:
    • Northbridge (IOH)
    • Southbridge (ICH)
    • DRAM.
The voltage monitored can be changed in BIOS.
