Default Jump Start PSU

Occasionally you may need to power up a psu , without connecting the motherboard etc.,
You may want to test it, or to power a waterloop to leak test it, where obviously you don't want the rest of the components powered.

To do this you need a paperclip

Push one end of the paperclip into the GREEN socket. and the other end into any BLACK socket.

Plug in the mains power lead and power up, job's a good un

Forgot all about this one, good thinking

Some PSUs it doesnt work on, like my Galaxy for example, doing this triggers the short circuit circuit and it goes mad!

And some will only fire up if you have something slightly meaty connected.

Just my 10p

Yes must admit i wanted to keep it simple. On some multi 12v rail PSUs it's worth plugguiing something into a molex. This avoids issues of crossloading.

How much dangerous is this? Would it be ok to do this to use the 12 V for something that would take let's say, 200/300 W from the 12 V? Or would i need something more complicated?

I use 3 psu's in total.

A 650w for my mobo, a 500w for HDD's and any optical drives when I run them and an older 250w psu for running 12 of my 14 fans.......the other 2 fans run on 15v laptop ac power adapters

Used these in 3 different setups for over 2yrs......never a problem

I've used a paperclip in 1 of them mate yeah. I like free solutions

I cut the clip into a 10mm length so when bent in half make a nice neat job and leave no excess protruding. Then bind it up well with some electrical tape and hey-presto...jobs a good'un

A more permanent solution would be to snip the green and black wire before the 20/24pin male connector and join them permanently that way (this is how my 250w is running). Although you'd only do that with a psu you were'nt gonna use for a mobo again (unless you were to rejoin the wires to the 20/24pin connector).

Thanx very much, I have a project that i will someday start, and finding a cheap way to get a solid 12 V PSU was one of the big problems, since the whole project will prob cost me like 1200 euros... Yeah building your own Hi-Fi speakers is not cheap at all..
