Test Set Up And Testing.

porter-set-up

I'm going to use the DFI JR P45-T2RS for testing the Porter.  The JR features a nifty block type set up that allows coolers to be easily and quickly swapped.  I will test at stock voltage and then 1.5v, both with and without a fan.  I will also be testing these on the bench rather than inside a case, that should avoid any discrepencies between different cases and so on.

The rest of the test bed is as follows:

  • Intel E8600 Wolfdale E0
  • DFI JR P45-T2RS
  • Crucial Ballsistix Tracer PC2-8500
  • Xigmatek Achillies
  • Gainward 8800GT
  • Arctic Silver Ceramique

I ran Prime95 blend test for 90 minutes, I also tried memtest, 3dmark and OCCT, but Prime95 produced the most heat in this instance.

After 90 minutes, the results were as follows:

Active, with a standard 80mm fan - no brand.

Stock Cooler - Please note, this cooler runs passively.

As you can see, the results are excellent accross the board.  Personally, I would take the couple of centigrade rise in temps and use it passive, it works well, but this will depend on your case's airflow and other coolers that you have in there.

Even using Xigmatek's largest CPU cooler, there is still room to fit an 80mm fan onto the Porter if you do decide to go that route.

Fixing the porter was slightly fiddly, and because space was tight on the DFI JR, I would recommend growing an extra hand - If you can't manage that, fit the Porter before you fit the CPU cooler, it makes things a little easier.

One oddity that I noticed with the Porter's retension mechanism was that the black allen screws that are supplied are about .5mm too long, so you need to use two nylon washers  (supplied in the bag) between that and the mounting brackets - Why don't they just supply shorter screws? - And silver ones at that!

Next, the conclusion...
