Nice! Are you using the original PWM heatspreader as a backplate?
If you didnt i think you can squeeze a few more degrees, as a lot of heat is transferred to the PCB through the solder joints, and the PCB won't bend if you use more pressure.

I am not using any back plate, do you mean the one i cut the fins off?
I looked at this but it will not fit the holes are too far apart. But I can try anything else you might like to see on there.

I was on XS and dejanh pointed out that the type4 base is thinner than the others, the base should be a suitable length too. So that might be worth a read if you fancy a look.

You could simply use the one you took away from the HD4870? I think the holes should have just the right spacing!

About the Type 4: it seems you cannot slide the push pins to center them (they would stay in corners) and i doubt the base is long enough to cover all of the transistors; plus it doesnt have the sliding mounting mechanism so it won't even reach the holes.

I will take a look at the stock cooler when i get home, it looked like it was all in one piece but certainly worth a try.
I got her to run 3DMark @ 835/1130 last night a couple of times with no crashes or artifacting. I think i am getting near what can be done on stock volts though.

Hi there,

Decided to join this discussion here because I am really enticed by the results and because I found affiliate's attempt interesting as it is something I was trying to do about two weeks ago on my 4870 XOC BE but had no ability to level the HR-09

Considering that he seems to have solved that problem I really want to see the final solution

Now in terms of the Type 4 fitting better, the Type 4 does not have movable pins. However, the pins are placed as far back into the corners as possible which is what I found needs to happen to be able to mount the HR-09 using the PCB mounting holes. On the HR-09 I also had to slide the clips all the way to the end onto the heatsink itself, on the 61mm side making the total coverage length 61mm. Considering that the Type 4 is actually 61mm in length as well with pins pushed to corners, I do not see why it would not fit.

I do not have a spare 4870 to try this on now unfortunately but I picked up a Type 4 so that I can try it when I get my hands on a spare one. Affiliate, can you please post detailed pics of your setup? I am most curious at the detailed pics of the HR-09 over the VRMs and how they have been leveled

I know you already have WIP pics, but I am looking for finals.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

I will add a bunch of photos tomorrow night and details of the non-standard/ghetto fixes i had to try.

If the E8600 arrives i will need to strip the whole thing out anyway to finish the HR05 review i started.

Welcome!

I see what you mean, and it could work as a backplate solution; but i fear that some of the transistors would only make partial contact with the base, as the cooler would not sit aligned with the little chips.
I suggested the HR09 Type 2 because it is possible to adjust the distance between the pushpins and sit it aligned.
