OK, i installed the HR09 Type 3 on my card and it fits perfectly, no mods required.
But I've taken a look at some pictures and the power section is quite different, so a Type 1 or a Type 2 may fit, but i'm not sure, i'll need measurements.
I got all 3 models of HR09 here at home, so i'll be able to check if one is suitable.

Great, if you get time will you be putting up pics of your 3870 with the type 3 on it?

Yeah sure, i'll grab the camera one of this days.
Remember to measure the hole to hole distance on the card, so i can tell you wich HR09 Type you should get.

I finally got around to measuring the back mounting holes.
It is 84mm between the two screw heads marked.
I see the type 1 and 2 both have their wider ends at 84mm; do you think they still be used this way around? I cant see how the mount fits on to the base, so its difficult to tell if this will work.
As ever your thoughts are appreciated.

The Type 2 is the one you want, in fact while the bigger base is 84 mm the smaller one is 70mm, but when you add the pushpins (wich can slide) it reaches the desired push pins distance quite easily (minimum distance is 78 mm).
There's a small but: of the 84 mm, the first and last 7mm will not be covered by the base wich is as i said, 70mm. So if any components that needs cooling is in that area it could be a problem, but you can go redestribute the uncovered space as far as 9 mm on one side and 5mm on the other (rather than 7 and 7) and still have a solid mount.
So take the measurements just to be sure, but looking at the pics of the HD4870 in the Hardware Canucks review, i'm pretty confident it will fit with very little effort.
I didn't have to use the thermal pad, but remember, the HR09 is 15mm (TR site says 15.5mm) wide, so check for nearby components that stick out higher than the power transistors.
