Default Thermalright V2 Installation Quickie

Hey all,

Was asked to post my pic's of my recent Thermalright V2 install. So here they are ...

First off this is an Asus EN8600GT Magic/HTDP/512M DDR2. Good card, but unfortunately the fan would just not start sometimes (I was going to change the HS anyway so no biggie).

Nice and easy, 4 screws and a little twist and off pops the old HS

Quick clean of the GPU with some isopropyl alcohol

While we're at it, a quick clean off of the ram chips too.

Thermalright give you these nice stick-on mini HS's for your video ram.

Next we stick them on. Notice the two flat ones in the middle at the top, this is to accommodate the V2 Heat Pipes.

Apply a thin layer of goop (in this case Arctic Silver 5) ... (For some reason it looks like I've applied it thicker in this photo than it actually was ?)

Place the card on top of the HS and secure the 4 thumb screws.

And there we go simple as that ... well still need to put a fan on it.

And here are a few photos with the fan attached.

All in all it brought my idle temperatures down by about 4-6 degrees and my load temp's down by about 10°C! ... (atitool for an hour and I cant get it to go above 52°C )

I'm Happy

Cosmic

Great review Cosmic, appreciate the effort mate. I'm sure it'll be a help to others thinking of trying after market cooling on their graphics cards.

A review from a proper end user gives a lot more credence I think than some flash review, we see elswhere

luck

From the Thermalright Web Site (here) I looks like it does, but they also have others that do as well by the looks of it. The HR-03 GT looks prety nice and may be better as it has more heatpipes, can fold around the card and can take a 92mm fan. (compat list here)

I'm sure there are other brands as well, and its probably worth researching them, but personally I've had 5 Thermalright heatsinks now over the years and have been happy with all of them.

I own a Sapphire HD 3870 512 MB, and I have a Thermalright V2 on it: installation is foolproof and you get a big siringe of Thermalright Chill Factor thermal paste with it (it's been tested to be slightly better than the AS5), just watch out because sometimes it separates in a clear liquid and a very dense white paste, squeeze a little on a kleenex b4 applying on GPU and heatspreader, if there is clear liquid, either shake it alot or even better insert a needle or any thin metal object through the point and mix a little.
Anyway, just go with it, only drawbacks are that the little spacers are easy to loose and that your card will be bent a little by the pressure of the screws.
Aw, and if you want it to fit in 2 slots, you have to use a 15 mm fan, i suggest you use a SilenX, the're pricy but provide a very good airflow with extremely low noise.
