Default The Windows 7 Thread - Tips, Tricks, Horror Stories And Annoyances

I thought I'd do a thread to compare notes, tips, tricks, horror stories and general annoyances.

I'm in need of a new hard drive for the laptop, so as soon as I get one, I'll stick it on there - Until then, there's a partition ready for it on the test bench

You can grab the 32 Bit and 64 Bit Betas from here.

Post your stuff chaps

I downloaded it the other day but I haven't had chance to test it yet. Gotta find somewhere to plug the DVD Drive in first (I have no spare power connectors on my PSU)

Just installed the 32 bit version...

Basically similar to Vista but better and less resource hungry (690MB at first boot)and this is Ultimate version.

It have the new task bar (apple style many says, but it was like this in win 1.0).

The graphic part seem lighter than Vista, disabling all visual effect il release just 20 MB of memory (while Vista is around 100 MB).

I really liked the User Account Control, it's been modified so it wont ask "are you sure you are doing this?" every 15 second, and it has also 4 level of notification now.

Basically it's better than Vista IMHO...

It's Vista lite with a face lift, which is why I won't be beta testing it for them and I won't be buying it as a consumer and unless there's something radically different come final release I won't even be buying it in a work capacity, I just don't see the point.

I hear ya. However i need to get using it for the benefit of my customers down the line.

I have d/led it but as i am utterly delighted with Server 08 i havent been tempted to installed it yet.

I will prolly throw it on to a spare partition i have on my laptop that i was going to use for a hackintosh install when i get a chance.

Same here, and trust me, there is nothing radical enough to throw any curves. You can read the msdn / technet documentation and know exactly where and what everything is and does.

I have been running it for a few days now, and must say it's much more stable than Vista Ultimate.
So far, I have only ran into 2 issues:
- Comodo Firewall didn't install under Windows 7, but did work when putting the installer into Vista compatibility mode.
- Have BSOD's on Media Center and iTunes when importing from NAS. (More likely a network issue with Win7)
The big thumbs up goes to Windows Updates, which looks at the hardware and automatically downloaded drivers (old FX5700 gfx and SB Live! sound-cards.

I must say so far, impressed with the overall stability. Just will do more tests with the NAS to see where the issues of the BSOD's come from.

(running Win7 on a P4 with 1.5Gb RAM)

I've got to try Win server 2008 yet, I still prefer the XP style of settings.. but i need a DX10 o.s. just gotta choose one..

And 7 in better and lighter than Vista, We'll have to wait like late 2010 to see a brand new Windows (I hope)

funnily eneough i have Server 2K8 setup to look just like Win2K. I still quite like the layout of windows "classic" the only thing i have added is the XP start menu.
