What is the difference between the on-board HD Audio and AC97 Audio?

The case into which I put this Mobo last night has two, 3.5mm jack sockets on the front. One for headphnoes and the other for a microphone.

The cable running from these sockets has 2 different terminations. Both are 8 or 10 way molex connectors and both would plug into the audio socket on the Mobo but I don't understand what it says about the audio in the Mobo manual.

The pinouts of the two molex housings are slighty different.

Which should I plug in and why?

Cheers guys
I have the HD Audio.. dunno why... that was a random choice xD

If the connectors aren't labeled then hopefully the manual for your case will say which one is what. In the two systems I've done that supported HD Audio the first connector was HD and the second was for AC '97. Hook up the first one and set the audio to "HD Audio" in the bios. Once you get the OS installed and install the drivers try it out. Read the wiki article for the details

ok I'm too noob to overclock more so I decided to rest with my 333fsb and amen.

now, for ram speed.. im at 1:1.25 with 4/4/4/12.. @ 2.1v --> if I try to use 1:1.50 i only obtain a bsod.. I have to higher the voltage ? or what ?

nothing goes as I want lol

EDIT: by the way.. I flashed the bios with the official v12 but it says "12) B09" O_o'

8500 memory is ok to around 1000 on 4,4,4,12.
333x1:1.20=ddr2 800Mhz
333x1:1.25=ddr2 832Mhz
333x1:1.50=ddr2 1000Mhz

For 1000mhz then try Try tras at 13
REFRESH CYCLE TIME (TRFC)........... 35 from 30

Need to reflash you sure you got M704B_12.BIN file & copied that to yoiur usb stick

Thanks guys for the help with HD and AC97 Audio.

So...has a new BIOS revision has hit the shelves then?

...and does it enable the strap to run at 1:1.25?

Again it's failing on large ffts , so most likelly still memory. It's just 2x1gb your on atm??

try 5,5,5,12

if that fails
Have you tried memtest on your ram ?? Memtest86 might be worth while testing a module at a time for a couple of hours each or until any error.
