Hi all nice to meet you
I am new to Overclocking but have studied hard in the last few days

I recently purchased the following hardware:

Abit iX38 Quad-GT
Intel Core 2 Quad-Core G0 Q6600
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2 Dominator, PC2-8500 (1066)
Zalman CNPS9700-LED Super Aero Flower Cooler

My intentions were to Overclock the CPU to 3GHz minimum and run the RAM at stock (1066MHz). However I have not yet managed to do this

With a 266FSB I can take the RAM to 1066MHz (1:2 strap and 2.15V VDIMM).
I can reach 400FSB and above with X9 giving me 3.6Ghz (1.45V VCore). A 1:1.2 strap here gives me about 960MHz RAM.

My temps are a little warm and I don't really want to push VCore much more on air.
I cannot get a 1:1.25 strap or greater to perform at 400FSB.
I can just about get a 1:1.25 strap to perform at 333FSB by upping the Northbridge (MCH) and DDR a touch. However I am still pushed to get the RAM to 1000MHz.

I was under the impression that purchasing PC8500 RAM would enable me to clock the CPU up and run the RAM at 1066MHz easily with such modern hardware.

How wrong I was

Please can anybody throw some light on my thoughts and findings?

Would I be better off running a lower latency PC6400 RAM (4-4-4-12) than my PC8500 RAM (5-5-5-15) running at 800MHz?
If so I was wondering whether to stick on 333FSB and 1:1.2 strap (800MHz RAM) with PC6400.

You have similar to me, push the ram voltage up to 2.20 and that may do it.

Read my thread in overclocking intel called "hi & help" as i have some details on there.

Are you able to run the x8 multiplier?
If so, try 450x9=3600MHz & 450x2=900x1.2=1080 for RAM

What BIOS version are you on?

Not many have luck with 1:1.25

hello vwgolfman,
glad to meet you saw your post in hexus
Welcome to the forum

you might like to try 8x450 21Hr Prime Stable it will take you closer to 1066 whilst still using 1:1.20. It may or may not work for you , a couple of us have managed it ok, but others have struggled. So look on my bios settings as a starting point not a certainty

luck

Edit: sorry Glowball didn't catch your post m8

Hi all and thank you for the nice welcome and suggestions.

OK just for you (plural) I shall try and get to 450FSB but I am a little concerned at this as I shall have to run a fairly high VCore in order to achieve this (or attempt to).

I am air cooling don't forget and the last time I ran at only 400FSB with a VCore of 1.45V I had temps of 73,66,66,72.

Even more VCore might give me meltdown

I was suprised it's the 1st motherboard i've had that took 8x450 with the same vcore as 9x400, if you actually look at my 9x400 post you'll see i ran with a higher vcore.

It's worth a try

Somethings not right there!

I'm on air using one of the thermalright extreme 120 coolers, and my vcore is about 1.53. idle temp is 29C on the CPU.

I have same CPU and mem as you do, but def push that mem up to the 2.20 as Corsair has always been a bit thirsty.

what bios are you on & where are you reading temps from. If reading from guru & bios is 12.08 then those temps are understated by about 5C if any earlier bios then the temps are 10~15C under stated. Coretemp is far more accurate.

luck

Bios is m704d11, just grabbed coretemp and run that and it says 39c at idle which is still WELL under what vwgolfman is reporting.

I still say something isn't right if he's reporting
