Tomorrow I'll have a e8500 for two weeks (yes!!). I'd see how my system will work with a dual core.

I'll also try your advise Unstable_hero, particulary the f6b bios. (thank's again).

i just bought the xigmatek! it is still boxed.. any suggestion on how to apply the thermal paste? (i bougth it separately (articsilver 5)..

i'm looking forward to push a bit my computer to higher cpu and fsb freq! :-)

Hi wally , good move. with the hdt coolers, it's recommended that you paste the cooler rather than the ihs(top of the CPU. Easiest way is to put a small amount on the ihs spread it then stand the cooler on it. you should see a trace og paste on the cooler so spread a little more paste over that area so that it's an even square. Then mounnt it. Did you get the backplate or are you just using the pushpins ?

I did it! I am so happy! Temperatures dropped (from the intel boxed cooler -- maybe wrongly-mounted) of ~15 degrees...
Thank you for your suggestions... At the end I found this illustrated example for the thermal grease.

It seems I can get stable at 425x9. My ram is therefore running at 1700 (instead of 1600), but no prime95 errors overnight.
FSB=+0.05, gmch=+0.10, vcore=1.30v
(1.30 was unreachable with the original intel cooler).

I've tried also 480x7.5=3.6GHz with a multiplier of 3.33D.
vcore at 1.35v. This is the result:
FSB=+0.05, gmch=+0.10 -> DOESN'T POST
FSB=+0.15, gmch=+0.20 -> POSTS BUT CRASHES DURING WINDOWS LOADING
FSB=+0.20, gmch=+0.30 -> POSTS, LOADS WINDOWS, PRIME95 CRASHES AFTER 2-3 MINS.

Fear to increase further... :-)
Even because I want a stable system, where simulations run overnight without giving me troubles.

Anyway,
thank you very much for your help.
Wally

P.S.
Does the type of error (crashes, BSODs, freezes, or Prime Rounding errors) give you an indication of the type of change that is required?

Ho Wally glad your temps are sorted
Yes prime gives you an indication of what's failing. CPU or Ram see Using Prime What are your sother settings?
If youi want get GIGABYTE GA X48T DQ6 and pasye it into a post with your current settings & we'll have a look.

Hi!
This is the current setting I am trying...
The x9 multiplier failed after several hours (even with 1.35v)...
Temperatures are @full load with small ffts ~55 degrees celsius.

When I try a FSB of 480 I have several problems...
I have tried with memory at standard and with relaxed timings.
I have tried with cpu at minimum multiplier.
It always freeze at the beginning of prime (when I am able to boot).

How much could I push the FSB and mch overvoltage without damaging and without special cooling systems on the chipset?

I also noticed that, if the system is "almost" (but not yet) stable, the most difficult part to "survive" is the calculation of ffts 768K (which seems to indicate ram issues...).
But why those memory vendors do not provide the right subtiming values?!?!

Bye,
Wally

EDIT: Anyway, thanks for the review of the Xigmatek. It is great. ;-)

Well, my system is stable at these settings, but I'm just looking for any suggestions:

CPU GTLREF2 Voltage*.......(61%)..: -3%
Loadline Calibration..............: Enabled
CPU Voltage Control...............: Enabled
Normal CPU Vcore..................: 1.34375V <---

There's a couple things I'm not satisfied with: I would like to run my memory multiplier at 4.00B/D (probably at CAS 7, I am fairly certain my RAM is capable of 1800mhz) and I'd like to bring my tRd down to 7 or 8 (may not be possible, as I'm running with 8gb of ram). The other thing that bothers me is I have seen others with Q9650's run at 4-4.2ghz with under 1.3V Vcore, yet the lowest I can seem to go and still be stable is 1.34375. Was originally hoping to get about 4.2ghz out of my overclock but this board is a little disappointing.

Also, can anyone provide a download link for the F6b BIOS some people were talking about? Sounds good but I can't seem to be able to find it anywhere...

So, I just spend last hours to install the OS and a e8500.

Conclusion, the ddr3 works fine with dual core, as it has to work. Here is my bios setting:

It succes one full memtest pass, 45 minutes of OCCT, but it didn't succed intel burn test (full stress, one error on five)
I think I can overclock higher but I just wanted to test my memory (I don't want spend to much time as it is not my system...)

So now, hum... I am hesitating about what to do. Resell my memory in order to change it with one more compatible with my motherboard (or one which doesn't work at high frequency but with better timing), or change de motherboard with one more 'quad' compatible...

héhé , that is the question

@hostility
Your ddr3 looks not so bad.

yes sounds like your ram.
If it freezes as you say, try increasing (G)MCH OverVoltage Control. Best to incvrease to the next value up, try it again & increase again if it fails.
You might also try increasing your tRD from 7 to 8 (assuming it's on auto & is showing 7 in the spd column ) ?

to run with the 9x multi you#kll need to increase vcore.
