o.k... neither of those settings were stable enough to install XP
?? what settings
Try as PaPa SuMrF suggests.
You don't have to have your memory running at 1600:-
Have a read of this Core 2 Duo Basic Overclocking guide for beginners
also try to understand this which shows the link between FSB ans ram speeds.

Hi PaPa SuMrF, & Supershanks...

I've tried what you've suggested PaPa SuMrF, and the only way I can get the machine to run reliably is to have the clock at 400x6 and the memory at 1600. Thanks for the OC for beginners link, I will take a look at it and see if i can get any ideas.

Do you think a future BIOS release will allow it to run 333*7.5 and 1600 for the memory or am I missing something here?

yea your missing something, the only way you ddr3 1600 will run at 1600 is if you set the cpu fsb to 400. give me some system info and ill help you get it running right. what cpu , memory name brand ect.

see this im running ddr3 1800, with a 1333 fsb cpu just like you . Im at 7 x450 Click on the link below and see what i mean.

Your missing the point.

1) Look at the chart i posted. You can see that the maximum divider is 4. In other words the maximum the memory can run is 4x FSB. Now if your insistent on sticking to stock FSB 333.33 then the maximum ram speed is 4x333.33 = 1333.

2) If you want to run at your rated ram speed of 1600 then why not run at 400x6 or better yet 400x6.5 which gives a slightly overclocked CPU speed of 2600

luck

I appreciate the insight you guys have given me; including the links and charts - though I don't understand all of it, I'm grateful for the knowledge that's here.

I'm not insistent on running it stock, I'm just insistent on getting the value out of my investment (which includes running the components at least as fast as they are rated), and for it to be rock-solid stable as it's going to be my work machine. And this may be a myth, but I don't want to reduce the longevity of my investment either; I'd like it to work solidly/reliably for 36 months, at which point, I will probably hand it down, and build another.

You guys are the gurus in overclocking - I'm not sure what degree of overclocking will achieve my goals without threatening the investment.

as of right now, I am running at 2.5Ghz (exactly the rated CPU speed), and 333*7.5. I am running the RAM at 1066 because it's stable there.

Here's my setup:
GA-X48T DQ6
intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz
4x 1GB DDR3 Crucial Ballistix 12800/PC3-1600 (only able to use 2 sticks and keep it stable)
2x 8600 Gigabyte Video Cards PCIEx16
2x 750GB Western Digital RE Series SATA II in RAID1
1x 320GB Western Digital SATA II
1x 500GB Western Digital SATA II
2x 20x DVD+/-RW SATA
PC Power & Cooling 650W Power Supply
Antec P180 Super Mid Tower
3x Acer 22" Widescreen LCDs

The RAM is supposed to be at 1.8v, so in the BIOS, I have adjusted it to +.30v, the timing on the RAM should be 8-8-8-24, so I have adjusted it also. I am running the RAM at 1066.

I have the board at 333 with a multiplier of 7.5 = 1333.

I'm not opposed to optimizing/overclocking to something reasonable assuming that it'll be reliable and will last a few years. I'm am using the stock cooler, and after several hours of Prime95 on the heat generation torture test, none of the cores aren't getting past 64*C according to Core Temp and 55*C according to Real Temp. I seated the proc with Artic Silver 5, and am using Gigabyte's CoolSink copper thingee that mounts on the bottom of the board. I don't know if this is adequate or not to overclock it.

What settings do you guys think are reasonable in terms of CPU clock speed, board speed & mulitplier, etc. Also, I can't get the other 2 sticks to be stable no matter what. It's not a RAM issue, as I've switched the pairs...

sorry PaPa SuMrF , must have been typing my reply as you posted your answer

Even if your not that interested in overclocking I'd get something better than the stock cooler, you'll be able to give your ears a rest if nothing else.

Can you please copy the GIGABYTE GA X48T DQ6 bios template into a post & enter your current settings.

It sounds more like your memory is failing as you've not increased (G) Mch voltage, we can make suggestions on other settings whilst we're at it.

i'll do that when i get back to the office. after doing a bunch of reading last night, i believe that reasonable overclocking won't have a detrimental effect on the stability or longevity of the system, so long as it's kept cool. i have ordered a zalman 9700 to replace the stock cooler. i have also adjusted the settings (based on the research last night) so that the system is now running at 1600 FSB, memory at 1600, and CPU at 3.0 (7.5x400), the vcore is manually set at it's default, and not auto in the BIOS (core voltage reporting at 1.168 through CPU-Z).

i've run prime for about 20 minutes with all fans on high and an extra house fan blowing on top of the CPU and RAM. I don't want to do a real burn-in, because I don't think the stock cooler is adequate to do this without overheating the proc... i've run it just enough to see if it's relatively stable and whether or not to proceed posting my settings for tweaking in the template you linked to.

things are stable right now, and when i get back to the office, I'll post the full template info for further optimization.

thanks again for the help.
