do you have the link for the measuring points for MCH and Vdimm?

if MCH is undervolting 0.20v that would explain why i need about 0.40v add.

yep it made sense though i'd like to validate it myself. Hope to fit a water block to my NB tommorow.

Default Aftermarket Cooling X38/X48 1of3

The heatpipes are probably better than any other current board in my opinion. I wanted to try a water block ,, otherwise I wouldn't perhaps have gone this route, at best adding a fan such as

Quite a few issues with compatibility if you go this route as a few of us have found.

Known Incompatable Coolers

1) Mossfet/PWM
Thermalright HR-09 U type 2 Mosfet We have been in contact with Thermalright & they have dropped this cooller from the compatability chart.CoolerFound by ckirkby3
This pic shows the issues the heatsink basee is bouut 2.5mm too wide :-
Will be sending this on to thermalright , who asked for a picture. Hopefully they will make a computable version.

2) Southbridge / Northbridge
Enzotech - Low profile Chipset block SLF-1 I ordered 1 of these great looking coolers to put on the Southbridge. the holes on the mobo are too close together to fit this unit.

CNB-N1(Rev A) Maximum mount width is 67.4mm which is too narrow for NB.

Noctua NC-U6 I tried tyhis on both NB (Mounting is about 1/2" to short) and SB (Either blocks sata port or PCI-E slot.

If you find or know of any Compatable or Incompatable coolers please let us know & I'll add it.

Aftermarket Cooling X38/X48 2of3

SB
I'd hoped to fit this Enzotech - Low profile Chipset block SLF-1 Much nicer looking than my current solution :-
an old hacked at Zalman ZM-NB32K North Bridge chipset

Update 19/04/2008
Wasn't happy with above, found an old heatsink I had from a vantec iceberg iI think it was.

Mounted it with some 3M Thermal Tape.

The double sided tape on the top is to hold a 40mm Papst Fan.

With Graphics card fitted in PCI-E2

PWM/Mossfet
I got 2 packets of the Enzotech MOS-C1 These fit as 2 rows of 10. It's a bit time consuming & fiddly but it works

I used the Retention holes to add 2 m3 threaded bolts so that I could mount 2x40mm Papst fans. These are secured by nuts above & below the fan.

All in all I'm quite plesed with this solution

Northbridge - Air Cooling
The Thermalright HR-05 Range are compatable.
See Compatability List Gigabyte IX38 DQ6
I used the SLI model the FX might be a better option for the NB. Couldn't mount it so that the fan exhuasted to rear of case.

This NB cooler is temporary whilst i change my water loop to add the NB Block

Water Block

The block is actually a CPU Cooler- Alphacool Cape KC42-X2 Pro originally for Socket 478.
I've used 2 of the wheelnuts from the kit to secure the Perspex mounting plate.

The Securing nuts are from the Thermalright HR-05
Was a bit concerned about lateral pressure from the tubes making the block mounting unstable, but it's very solid

Another shot showing the secured mounting & tubes

ok..i see the TIM is all the same...NOW...i am wondering about the thermal efficiency (heat transfer capability).

sorry for all the questions ahead of time!

what kind of thermal paste did you use for your NB?

do those little copper heatsinks have sticky TIM on the bottom or do you use a thermal TIM glue?

are they Mosfets below the copper heatsinks?

as to cooling the PWM, i rely on my Panaflo fan mounted on the pull side of the TRUE to help cool the PWM heatsink.

and, for the PWM heatsink, i have done something similar with a fan monted parallel to the heatsink blowing air across the fins.

Currently using Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound

The little copper heatsinks come with 2sided sticky thermal pads

see pics 2 & 3 :-
Heatpipes2

Updated SouthBridge cooling
&
finished adding Water block to my loop Northbridge Water block
Pretty pleased with result, though i think if your just on air cooling it may be better to stick with the heatpipes & just add a fan as I did originally:-
