you do not need a VFD...you just download a HP tool and win98 boot files and it converts the USB drive to a bootable device with storage capacity to store any bios file and ability to save the old bios file...this is done with a FAT32 table...very simple and painless...you don't have to make a new CD...you just add the bios file to the USB drive...i have 3 different board BIOSes on one 4gb USB drive...1gb sticks are so darn cheap right now!

Yeah I've got a corsair flash voyager on the way and have also read the How to that no doubt you read also (How to Make a USB Pen Drive Bootable), but I was still interested to hear how you do it through CD. Worse case I have access to a floppy also, but I like learning (part of the whole reason I chose to go selfbuild) and also of course an extra backup method never hurt

Update on my LT X48 RMA:

After inspection I was told by the eTailer that although the heatsink is bent (see pics on one of my previous posts) that I shouldnt expect any replacement to be better. To be honest I thought wtf?, but at least this way we didnt waste eachothers time with a potential 2nd RMA. So im taking a refund instead. Trying to work out an alternative eTailer who can guarantee a non bent Minator.

Out of interest im wondering how many here would have happily accepted the board with the heatsink as I posted in pics (perhaps if you always intended to replace it anyway I guess) ?

Who was the retailer? That's a terrible attitude to take with someone that they have sent damaged goods to

I wouldn't have accepted the heatsink like that, regardless

It was Scan. The guy who dealt with my RMA (who seemed reasonable tbh) wasn't the person who actually checked/tested my board. He said that according to the RMA notes his colleague had left that I shouldn't expect any replacement board to be better.

So either the guy who inspected my heatsink failled to notice the bend (I guess its possible that if you didnt know better you could think the heatsink was meant to be shaped that way since the bend and ripple in the fins is very even through out, but I doubt it tbh), or they just had a shipment where many of the heatsinks were in similar condition.

So once im told that I shouldn't expect a replacement to be any better (no matter how suprised I was to hear that), I reckon at that point the safest thing is to ask for credit instead. Otherwise, as seemingly unacceptable as it is, I couldn't really be suprised if I had a repeat of the problem. Still, quite weird though eh?

? That's cold s**t! Lucky me my minator was ok! I wouldn't have kept it that way, since it seemed unusable and you can't resell anything like that.. And why would another motherboard have the cooler bent? I guess they have a bad batch of DFI boards at Scan.

Absolutely, I would have done the same if they had said that to me.

If they had a load of bent ones, I'm not sure why they would send them out knoing they would have to pay for the carriage back again - weird. I reckon they most likely were busy and that was the story you got to get rid of you

Anyway, when's the new one arriving?

hi I'm new here(been on here before reading the reviews etc but only just registered).

I'm looking into getting custom watercooling and this motherboard, so had a question which no one seems to be answering on this other forum I go on.

the watercooling I'm looking at:

Coolermaster Realpower M850 £109.11
Swiftech Apogee GTX £42.99(yes I know the the D-Tek Fuzion and EK Supreme are the ones to go for, but the D-Tek has stock problems and from reading I don't like the sound of the mounting problems of the EK. prefer the mounting of the Apogee as I'm used to it.)
Swiftech MCW30 £16.35(will this fit? also anyone know of any better?);
Swiftech MCP655 £49.99;
Swiftech MCRES Micro Reservor £12.45 or XSPC 5.25 Bay Reservoir Blue £21.99;
Yate Loon 120x120x25 D12SH-12 2200rpm £3.99 each(3 or 6?);
XSPC 1/2" High Flex 3m £8.67(£2.89 per meter. which colour?);
Zinc Plated Wormdrive for 1/2" tubing x10 £3.60;

specialtech total: £247.15(Swiftech res), £256.69(XSPC res)
5% discount for cpc readers: £234.79(Swiftech res), £243.86(XSCP res).
prices not inc the £7.69 delivery

XSPC RS360 with nickel plated 1/2" barbs £28.99;

watercoolinguk total £36.98(inc £7.99 delivery)

total £279.46(Swiftech res), £288.53(XSPC res).

both the waterblocks come with Arctic Ceramique, will that be ok or should I get Arctic Cooling MX-2(or similar)?

I will be getting a fan controller at a later date, initially I want to have the watercooling set up and the pc up and running. any suggestions for a good fan controller welcome.

my pc specs will be:

Coolermaster Cosmos S;
Coolermaster Realpower M850(will be getting with the watercooling);
Q9450(tho will have a test on the Q6600 & E6600 to see how far I can push them after I have the watercooling all setup and working);
DFI Lanparty LT X48 T2R(still need to buy);
2GB Corsair Dominator PC2-8500 CAS5;
Xpertview 9800GTX;
Creative Xifi Extreme Gamer;
Samsung Spinpoint 500GB(may get a 750GB/1TB at a later date. have a 250GB that will going in a LAN Box);
Samsung SH-S183A SATA DVD-RW;
LiteOn IDE DVD-ROM;
Floppy Drive.

all this upgrade this monthis costing me ~£850(could be more once everything is done and dusted). it includes the 9800GTX, the Q9450, the Cosmos S, the PSU, Motherboard and the watercooling. this pc will have cost me ~£3000 in the last 18months.

I have Fesser Oner Clear Coolant, got this back in end of October when I got the Swiftech H20 120 Compact. that little experiment ended up a disater as it killed the Asus Maximus Formula SE and the Xifi Xtreme Music due to a leak, I connected the Fusion Block which turned out to be the source of the leak as far as I could tell. I'd cut the tubing from the waterblock/pump to the Fusion Block a little short. when I was testing before puting the hose clip on it was fine, but kinked once the hose clip was on. I could take the hose clip of the tubing at the waterblock/pump end so couldn't cut a longer piece.

Welcome to the forums

What you should do is, go into our forum sponsors section (watercooled-pcs), PM Lee (watercooled-pcs) and tell him how much the stuff is from the other places and see how much he will do it you for.

If he can't help, we can go from there
