yep you can use any of the 2.00 straps i tend to use D or B
I'm not sure if your retaining the crazy Cool with your Zalman CPS9700 is causing issues. I Think i'd try running with it remaoved see Remove CrazyCool CPU/NB Lower Heatsink
cpu temps is directly linked to vcore. changing FSB OverVoltage Control ( Vtt ) has some effect, but much less and the (G) MCH OverVoltage Control ( NB ) has no impact.

Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 and Corsair Dominator Memory problems
I think maybe I'll toss the fan and standoffs in favor of some better cooling. I originally just wanted to get my system stable. With your suggestions I can do that at 3.00Ghz. I ran memtest HCI to 3000% and prime blended for 8 hours.
But now I find I'm fascinated by the whole over-clocking thing. Its sort of like building a fast car its ... well it just cool. I suppose I'm bitten and like all the over-clockers, I would like a fully blown 6000 hp alcohol burning dragster. Cold as HE double toothpicks and able to make the jump to light speed.
I'd really like to be able to get to 3.6+ and have a cold board. But right now I'm limited by temperature. Since you are experienced at cooling the DQ6 boards, adding water, heatsinks, and fans - I was wondering if you had any sage advice for me... you know, the the sort of, "If I had it to do over I would do it this way...." stuff.

Hehe , yep my wife likes it cos unlike a car I don't leave oil everywhere , but yes I know what you mean
That means bulkier & noisier You may be able to get 3.6 on air , but will probably need a better cooler, it might be that 3.4 gives a cooler, quieter 24/7 clock.
Best CPU Coolers of Q1 2008 is an up to date guide, though i'm not familiar with the OCZ , have heard some good things about Xigmatek coolers. My own favourite is the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme or True.
It would probably be best keeping the heatpipes , perhaps adding a 60mm fan to cool the north bridge as seen here Aftermarket Cooling X38/X48 1of3 You'll need to run without the crazy cool bottom plate. Just check that the heatpipe screws are quite tight, be careful , they can be overtightened, despite the springs.
hope that helps.

weird.... so i get home today and move some things around in my case, attempting to create some more air flow, so i relocated the hard drive from the front of my case to the rear next to the PSU. i noticed my temps were lower than normal and it seems to have made a difference. before moving the hard drives it was idling around 35C-40C, after moving them it dropped to 27C this is with my system currently OC'ed at 355x9 1.415V....but the really weird thing is that when i move my mouse, open windows, etc etc, i notice lag. so i ran registry cleaner and ccleaner to see if it would help, no dice.
any thoughts as to what i should check out?
update on temps: okay, so the reason my temps were in the high 20's was due to my window being open and cold air coming in.

hi lokeey,
it may be your drive that's running warmer ?? use everest or speedfan to check drive temp.
May be worth defraging ??

good point! before it had a 120 fan blowing on the drives, now it's in the rear with a 90 fan pulling the air out, so that may be the case. the only temp i see on speedfan for my HDD is my 200GB which usually runs around 29C-33C. i don't see temps for my Raptor's and i know those run hotter. how can i check the temp on the raptors?

usually mouse lag is an indication of a resource conflct...did you unplug the drives during the move?...did you plug them back into the same ports as they were before?
you might want to try a new mouse just to make sure the mouse is not failing, or, it is a dirty bottom ball type mouse.

yes, i did unplug the drives and i plugged them all back into the same ports.
the mouse is laser so it's not the mouse.
i'm also noticing my like a lagging sound on video like a max headroom...
update: i've unplugged the drives again, just to double check that the connectors were seated properly...same on the ports...reseated the video and ram, still same thing.

if the mouse is an USB type, unplug it in windows and then replug it into a different USB port bank to see if that corrects the problem.
