I was hoping for some help getting my system stable or to hit 4+ghz with my e6850.
I am running ocz 8500 platinum (5.5.5.15 1.3v max)
I tried to add +.5v, +.10v to (G)MCH OverVoltage Control but it made my system unstable. Why did it help others? I am running a evga 8800 gts 640 and with the bios settings above I got a 9434 in mark3d2006 all on the ge-x48-dq6. Should I start testing the system with CPU Host Clock Control:x8?

Also here is a list of setting I don't know
the best setting for:

CPU GTLREF1 Voltage* :auto
CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control :1000mv
PCI-E OverVoltage Control :normal

CPU Enhanced Halt(CIE) enabled

Virtuaalization Technology enabled

I am happy with the board so far. I am walking away from my evga 680i after two RMA so
this bios stlye is really new to me.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOT6850 (42C that is)

PS I want my cpu cool becuase my 8800 gts is so dang HOT :{

Hi hot6850,
welcome to the forum
First thing
Quote:
ocz 8500 platinum (5.5.5.15 1.3v max)
I assume max is a typo & you mean 2.3v ?? So I'd go with a DDR2 overvoltage of 0.5v (2.3v - 1.8v) your +0.20v may be the cause of the instability.

I'd also try changing these :-
Quote:
FSB OverVoltage Control :+0.10 --> 0.15~0.20v
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control :norma ---> 0.175~0.250
l
They should add a bit of stability , let us know how you get on

Re other settings :-

CPU GTLREF1 - iMay be of use if trying to increase stability of quad cores, not needed on dual core

Quote:
CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control :1000mv
Controls the PLL output to the CPU & NB. I found like others that 1000mv was good ffor the quad. You might try the default 800 for yours , not sdur. May be worth experimenting.

Have a read on the links in the Tuning & Tweaking section , although this is the X48 ddr3 board the bios is the same and the explanations are relevent The Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6 - Redefining the High End? - BIOS Guide and Information

luck

Default Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 and Corsair Dominator Memory problems

Hi Supershanks,

I've been reading this thread for a while now and I am really grateful for the information you posted here!

It has been a struggle for me to get my GA-X38-DQ6 stable even at 2.40GHz. Memtest86+v2.01 would error within two passes when I used the EPP SPD settings that I got from Memset. (5-5-5-15-2T-22-56-4-8-4-4-7,8us-2.20V)

I thought I had some bad modules but then I tried some of the suggestions you have made to others clunkers and I have my system working. Its not fast, but Prime95 will run now so far three hours and thats a big deal because it would not even start with the SPS settings.

What do you think would a good next step?

Default Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 and Corsair Dominator Memory problems

Supershanks, thank you for helping me.

I made all the changes you suggested to everything but I was cautious about the CPU voltage. So I started raising the CPU Voltage control a little at first to 1.40625V. My system booted ok but prime95 only lasted three minutes. So I cranked it up another notch and prime95 failed after three minutes again. So, I set CPU voltage at 1.4125V and put the static read value back to 9. This time Prime95 lasted about 15 minutes. When prime95 stopped Coretemp was 65C. So this is were my settings are now. I'm wondering where to go from here?

Try :-
1)
Ideally try below a stage at a time & check effect in prime.
Quote:
******* Clock Driving & Skew Control ********
CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control ............ [900mV] ---> 800mv
CPU Clock Skew Control ..................... [Normal] ----> 50 ~100
(G)MCH Clock Skew Control .................. [Normal] -----> 50 ~100
2)
Try increasing both of the settings below by a notch on each.
Quote:
FSB OverVoltage Control .................... [+0.20V]
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control ................. [+.275V]
(G)McH can be increased further if necessary. this is your Northbridge/memory controller voltage. Increasing it can add stability to both CPU & ram. Again check results in Prime.

Also when running prime , make a note of what it was running when it stops wiyth an error. This can give a clue as to what's failing memory or CPU. Another option is to lower
System Memory Multiplier to 2.00 (1:1) so that memory is running slow & therefore stable, any failure is then due to cpu. Onve prime runs stable , then imncrease it back to your target.

luck.

Default Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 and Corsair Dominator Memory problems

To set the system memory multiplier to 2.00 I should use 2.00D because the FSB is set to 400, right?

Even though I am cooling the DQ6 with air, I wasn't expecting my temperatures to be so high. I am using a Zalman CPS9700 that is attached with machined nylon standoffs. The standoffs let me keep that massive copper CPU/northbridge heatsink plate attached to the bottom of the DQ6 while still applying even pressure to the CPU. I assumed the extra mass would help cool things down but my CPU temps are now 66C.

I was wondering which of the changes I am making to the M.I.T. will have the most effect on CPU temperature? Do you think increasing the FSB OverVoltage Control and the (G)MCH OverVoltage Control will cause the CPU to get even hotter?

Thanks for helping me.
