Hmm...

well I sort of would like to see If I can at least get it stable. But going over 1.5v vCore worries me a bit cause I know without extra cooling I'm going to be heading toward the 70 degree cut-off for the q6600. But for the purposes of testing I can direct an air-conditioner toward the system which will give me a bit more to play with (about 10 degrees from experience).

Only thing is, as I said o/c'ing to this level is beyond anything I've done before, and I keep hearing terms like 'electron migration' etc that can damage your IC's as much as excess heat ? At what point does heat become not the only issue you have to worry about ? Assuming you can keep the heat under 65C what's roughly is the max 'safe' vCore voltage ? (yes I know there are no guarantees when you push parts past spec, I'm just looking for a rough guide ?)

what's your FSB & MCH overvoltages at ??

I wouldn't worry too much about chip degradation unless your planning on running your components for > 5 years or so. As a rough rule though , I'm with you in that i try not to exceed 65C peak temps on air.

On a 24/7 basis max vcore i've run is 1.4625v, i reckon maybe 1.48v, though i'm on water.

Yea googling round, the general consensus seems to be that what level you take your vCore to isn't that much of an issue (within reason), just so long as the heat is kept down.

In fact I've just found some posts claiming to have oc's of 3.8 and 4.0 with vCores of 1.55 and even 1.6 using the same Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme HS that I'm using, whilst keeping the max temps under 70. Though I wonder about how rigorously they did their max heat testing at those voltages (sounds sus to me )

yep, it's a different story with the new 45nm CPU's but there is a fair latitude with these.

Ok well I got my system to start to stabilise at 3.69, but it required a vCore of 1.49375v - 1.50000v to do it. Unfortunately with my current cooling (see image) it started to get to unacceptable heat levels within 5 min of running prime small fft. (A few min's after this screenshot two of the cores hit 69C so I stopped the test).

Still least I know now what it takes to get to that next level of o/c. Maybe if I'm so inclined I might lap the HS and CPU and run the whole thing outside of the case with 2 fans on the Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme just to see if its possible to get it to this high an O/C just on air.

Am itching to go water, if it wasn't so darn expensive and such a limited range here in Australia hehe.

Cosmic.

Default SATA AHCI + Vista

Hello,

Anyone out there had any luck with a fresh install of VISTA using AHCI for a SATA HD on Intel's controller (not Gigabyte's). I'm using Seagate 7200.11

Did you need to save the drivers off the CD onto a diskette to use during VISTA’s installation, if so which drivers did you use and would a USB key work instead?.

Thanks!

While I haven't played with ACHI (I use RAID) I'm pretty sure you need the " Intel ICHR9 Preinstall Driver "

Direct Link for Vista x86 (32 bit)

Direct Link for Vista x64 (64 bit)

I'm not experienced with vista install or with when you utilise these drivers during the install process, but if its similar to XP you'd press f6 at the beginning of the install process after booting from the install CD/DVD and it then should give you the option to load extra drivers. (I'd suspect that the way to load the drivers during the vista intall may be a little different but I'm sure you'll work it out.) Sorry can be more specific, but hopefully it will help.

I don't use vista , but supposedly vista doesn't require floppy drivers & [f6]

Just ensure you select AHCI access mode in bios before attempting the installation.

when your installation is complete update to the latest drivers

Luck
