Hi Zenoth,
suggest you check the same as lokeey, which FFt orthos or prime is failing on. This will give you an indication of what is failing.

Alternatively , put your memory on 1:1 (2) & run prime if it fails it then it's most likely your CPU.

I stuck to a bit higher cpu clocks on my E8400 Intel E8400 Wolfdale Living Review but seem to remember having to increase vcore from stock setting tyo reach 9x400.

So you may need to tweak vcore from 1.220v , you'll need to experiment.

re memory timings I would try these for 400 x 2.66 = 1064Mhz
Code:
DRAM Timing Selectable :
Standard Timing Control
CAS Latency Time: : 5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# : 5
DRAM RAS# Precharge : 5
Precharge Delay(tRAS) : 10
Advanced Timing Control
ACT to ACT Delay(tRRD) : 4
Rank Write to READ Delay :4
Write To Precharge Delay :6
Refresh to ACT Delay : 30
Read To Precharge Delay : 4
tRD :7
tRD Phase Adjustment :Auto
Command to #CS Timing: : 2T
Code:
System Voltage Control
DDR2 OverVoltage Control : 0.35~0.4v
PCI-E OverVoltage Control : 0.35v
FSB OverVoltage Control : 0.20v
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control :0.175v
MCH Reference Voltage Control : Normal
DDR Reference Voltage Control : Normal
DDR Termination Voltage Control : Normal
CPU GTLREF1 Voltage* :
CPU GTLREF2 Voltage* :
Hopefully they'll give you a start point

Default GA-X38-DQ6, Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme & Sound Glitch Questions

Hi Supershanks and Clunkers, just an update and a few questions...

Have been running my Q6600 stable at stock, with 4 x 1GB corsair stick (4,4,4,12) for little over a week now (Have included my settings and system specs below for those interested) and should be getting my CPU and GPU HS's later today.

Q1. The CPU HS Im getting is the
'Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme'. Is anyone else using this HS with the GA-X38-DQ6 ? Does anyone know to fit this HS if the only componant you only have to permanently remove is the crazycool hs from behind the CPU on the back of the mobo. Not the entire gigabyte heatpipe assembly as well ? (the Thermalright Website sort of implys that you do have to remove the entire assembly but I cant see why ? ) (damn I cant post links yet till I've posted 5 times )

Q2. Also I'm getting this weird sound glitch from time to time. It occurs in games, watching movies or listening to music. Its sort of like the sound freezes for a moment, with a fast repeating sound, brrrr, dtttt, that sort of thing (hard to describe sound in words ).
I have a couple of different 32 and 64 bit windows o.s's installed and it happens under all of them.

It seems to happen intermittently, and I cant see any obvious causes or relationship to anything else? Anyone else have this problem? or could suggest how I could start diagnosing it?

Thanks for all the great info guys. Realy looking forward to O/C'ing this sucker soon.

Cosmic

Q1) You'll only need to remove the Crazycool as i did Remove CrazyCool CPU/NB Lower Heatsink i'ts just the plate from underneath the mobo. That's replaced in effect by thermalright's backplate.

Q2) Had nowt like that. Clunk had an Asus Commando that he said was like a canary. If yours is intermittent I'd try :-
1) Are your connections ok , sometimes can cause a crackle.
2) Are drivers the latest ??

Sorry can't really help too much on sound.

Thanks for posting & sharing your settings
Look forward to seeing your ocing results

that's the thing, i get bsod just running a basic benchmark test with Everest Ultimate or PCMark05.

Thanks a lot supershanks, I will try those settings, but before I try I'd like to know why I should increase the PCI-E voltage?

And should I try 2.66C or 2.66D?

It helps stability & it does seem to suppress the need for extra vcore slightly , acting like a damper.

Alright, I think that I've reached a stable configuration. I still have some testing to do, but the culprit of my previous instability issues was caused by the Memory. That Memory is giving me headaches.

Here are my settings:

Code:
Robust Graphic Booster ..................... [Auto]
CPU Clock Ratio ............................ [ 9 x]
CPU Frequency .............................. 3.70GHz (412x9) / Strap 2.40B (5:6)
CPU Host Clock Control ..................... Enabled
x CPU Host Frequency(MHz) .................. 412
PCI Express Frequency(MHz) ................. 100
C.I.A.2 .................................... [Disabled]
Performance Enhance ........................ [Standard]
System Memory Multiplier ................... [Auto]
Memory Frequency(MHz) ............. [800]
DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) ... [Manual]

********** Standard Timing Control **********

CAS Latency Time ................. 5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay .......... 6
DRAM RAS# Prechard ............... 6
Precharge Delay(tRAS) ............ 16

********** Advanced Timing Control **********

ACT to ACT Delay(tRRD) ........... 4
Rank Write To READ Delay ......... 4
Write To Precharge Delay ......... 8
Refresh To ACT Delay ............. 58
Read To Prechard Delay ........... 4
Static tRead Value ............... 8
Static tRead Phase Adjust ........ Auto
Command Rate(CMD) ................ 2

******* Clock Driving & Skew Control ********

CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control ............ 1000mV (what's that option for?)
CPU Clock Skew Control ..................... [Normal]
(G)MCH Clock Skew Control .................. [Normal]

********* System Voltage Optimized **********

System Voltage Control ..................... [Manual]
DDR2 OverVoltage Control ................... +0.35
PCI-E OverVoltage Control .................. [Normal]
FSB OverVoltage Control ..................... +0.20
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control ................. +0.175
MCH Reference Voltage Control .............. [Normal]
DDR Reference Voltage Control .............. 1.34375V (1.312V in CPU-z)
Normal CPU Vcore ........................... 1.22500V
So a 700Mhz over-clock, which isn't too shabby, I guess. But as I mentioned the Memory so far isn't very good and barely runs at default factory settings (seriously, I've experienced a few BSOD's at 5-5-5-15 2.2V and 2.1V, but when I reduce the timings to 5-6-5-15 or 5-5-6-15 ot 5-6-6-15 or finally 5-6-6-16 then things seem to stabilize, so I've been using the 5-6-6-16 settings just to stay on the safer side. According to my benchmarks it didn't affect the performance much, if at all (from 8,480'ish ti 8,320'ish in Everest).

First I've tested the CPU with Orthos (CPU stress, no RAM tested) for 6 hours without errors (I know I should go for more). Then I decided to test the Memory with a Blend test, and as I type this, with the settings shown above, it's been testing for 20 minutes without problems. I'll let it go for another six hours or so too, and then I think I'll stay there for quite some time. But right now I'm seriously considering to eventually change the Memory, and perhaps also the Power Supply, but I'd go with a Memory change first. I mean I've read almost everywhere on the web that my Memory is supposed to be able to run at 4-4-4-12 at 2.2V or 2.3V, but not only mine can't even POST at anything below 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V, 2.4V and 2.4V, but it also isn't 100% stable at default settings, so they must be faulty... or maybe the BIOS is just ruining everything... but I have yet to read any horror stories concerning that revision in particular.

It's an interesting point re memory & E8400.
When i ran mine on the abit IX38 i had to change tras from 10 to 12. With the q6600 i''d run at 5,5,5,10 on both the gigabyte & Abit boards. No way could i manage it with the E8400
The 1st shots of my E8400
9x450 1.1.20 = 1080Mhz Bios vcore = 1.375v
5,5,5,18 before i found tras 12 worked.

Sounds like you might have some tweaking there maybe try 5,5,5,12~18

I'm not sure why this should be so , but we've both seen the same issue, yours seems to be worse than mine. At least you seem to be better than you were, but understand the frustration with your ram.

luck

random thought:
speaking of the crazcool, when installing my zalman 9700 i wanted to leave the crazy cool backplating on the board, but with the zalman backplate bracket i know this was not possible. it was either one or the other. so what i did was, instead of removing crazycool (which i think adds a lil more protection) was remove the mini lugnuts that were in the zalman back plate bracket and secured each lugnut in place instead of using the bracket. i just made sure to get them as tight and secure as possible. i think this has helped keep my cpu temps in the low 30s idle and mid 50s under load with the zalman running at 100%. this was a bit of a pain in the arse to do, but i really didn't want to get rid of crazycool.
