I use a 3ftx2ft textured plastic writing mat, like those they have in banks.
Ive used them as mats ever since laser mice have been available.
I find they grey and black ones best.
The texuring is very fine on these and they are foam backed too so they work well as a mouse mat for anything i can think of.
Ill try to find a link for them.

Oddly enough I've found that a plain white sheet of A3/A4 paper taped to the desk works really well, for a while.
