Trying to get my i7-920 stable @ 4200Mhz

    Hi all

I'm trying to get my cpu to run stable at 4.2Ghz but when i try to run Prime95 my machine locks up after 3 or 4 tests and i get a BSOD STOP 0x00000124.
I'm trying to figure out how this happens played around with voltages, timings, made sure i got all the newest WHQL drivers from the manufacturers of my HW..
Everything should check out and i got my system stabled out as far as i am capable of, am able to run high load games like GTAIV, MW2, Fallout 3 and so on maxed out without any probs but when i really stresstest my machine it wont work..
Here is my setup as it is now :

    Code:

According to RealTempGT my idle Temps are around 31C and under 100% load they hang around 72C although they can spike as high as 87C
Anyone know how to get it more stable?

124 error is generally what you get when there's not enough Vcore, or you are at the point where the CPU is running too fast.

If you want to reduce the temps but still keep at 4200MHz, try disabling hyperthreading.

The other thing is, you are running 1600MHz RAM at 1683MHz, that could also be a cause of the instability. I would advise dropping the memory divider down one and concentrate on the CPU for now.

Also, you may find that at these clocks you need more QPI voltage.

As well as the things Clunk has said, if you are stable in games, it might be worth trying with the CPU PLL voltage lowered to 1.425v. There is a chance you may not be able to boot by trying it, but if it works for you, it will lower your cpu temps drastically and may well give you better stability.

Well, i changed my CPU ratio to x21 and am now able to run my mem at 1600Mhz i selected it manually bcause my mobo automaticly chooses 1683Mhz at those clock speeds..

Disabled HT and i am seeing great drop in temps. (Maxed out at 62C instead of 72C, no temp spikes )

Running Prime95 for about 45mins atm and no problems at all for now.

I raised my QPI to 1.4000v. (First time i see yellow numbers in my BIOS :P)
My NB/SB temps also stay low despite the fact i raised the volts of my QPI
They hover around 52C instead of 75/80C so that's to.

Nice side effect is that my bootup time is also drasticly shorter dunno why that is, but it is.. LOL

    @kitfit1

I would gladly lower my CPU PLL where it not that i can't..., 1.81592v is the lowest setting i can select, i even think it's default.

Only downside is that i now wanna go to 4.4Ghz (if it stays stable @ 4.2Ghz that is) but dunno if my gear is up to it.., any advice on that?
I'm planning on getting a new, better system in a few months so i wanna see what this system can do when pushed to the max

Thnx for the help so far

Give it a good testing at 4.2GHz first, save the settings and then we can look at the next step, that way, you can always go back to your 4.2GHz settings if 4.4GHz doesn't work.

Atm i'm running stable still while running prime95 on the background since my previous post doing other things 2 at the same time..
I'll keep it running overnight to see if any errors occur, if no errors occur i'll call it stable..

had it run Prime for over 17Hours..
No errors to date.., temps stayed nice to, average of 65/70C. so i think it's stable

yeah i also found that my i7 920 could go well past 4.2 but only if HT was disabled. as you've seen with HT disabled you are given a 6th gear for sure. for me i decided HT was more important that the extra overclock so decided to stick to 4.0 with HT enabled. good luck.
