Core i7 Overclocking Guide For Beginners

What i was doing wrong is that i was just hitting enter once i got on BCLK. I was supposed to type in the numbers manually and press Enter after.

A couple of things:

When you say it doesn't work, what exactly happens when you try it? Are you saying that you can't even get to say the first step?

because I know it can go lower. But this is my first over-clock

I'm slightly confused how you know it can go lower if it's your first overclock? Sixth sense?

I saw your system specs and it says you got to 4.4 on a core i7 920. How did you do this ?


Also right now i have the cooler master storm sniper case. it has an option for 1 200mm fan or 2 120 fans for the side. it also has an option to add a 140 or 120 in the bottom.

Which fans should I go for? I want to upgrade all of this before I go to your final guide for the 4 ghz overclock.


edit - i also have the cooler master v8 and the 2 200mm fans that the case already comes with.

This thread might explain it further. There's no settings, but there's other info there.

Not sure about those fans, if it was for me, I'd be going with whatever gives the best mix of quiet and performance

Well im happy with my new build and ive prob got a bit more to squeeeeze out of my cpu but it`s not DO stepped so 3652Ghz will have to do for now. Just a couple of questions with the mb like what temp does the mb sensor get to when benching as mine got to 58 the other day. Im gonna fix this by putting some extra fans on the bottom of my case as the sensor for the mb is located near the 2nd pcix slot"or so ive read".
2nd question is what QPI Data link speed should i have as auto gives me 3130.1Mhz (reading from cpuz)

I see you have 1333MHz memory, try dropping the memory divider to the next lowest and that may allow you to go higher on the CPU.

Leave the QPI link on auto for best results.

Should I go for 4.0 or is there a higher percentage of errors? Also if I am running prime95 for an hour how high do i let the temperatures go in each core?

I saw 76c and i shut down prime95. i got a little scared.
