A couple weeks ago I got a q9650 to put in my P5B mobo. I read a handful of noob OC'ing guides from various sites and noticed that none of the guides explained what to expect or what exactly to do when the OC fails, ie: the computer doesn't post. I would then do a hard reset but 90% of the time I could never get it to post again. What I ended up doing is taking the cmos battery out and then putting it back in which would then let me post but of course my bios settings were back to defaults. Is the correct thing to do?

The beginner OC guides I read were all extremely helpful but don't forget that part of being a noob is not knowing what to expect or what exactly to do when the OC fails!

Thanks for your time.

You haven't read this guide properly then. The third post in the thread tells you about that.

C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners

Also, in your other thread, you state you had a dead core on your CPU - this is a pretty rare occurrence, so obviously no amount of recovery is going to fix it.

Thanks Clunk, I didn't see that troubleshooting section, very helpful as others have exclaimed about your entire guide! No offense intended.

Default NOOB CLOCKER!

FIRST OF ALL , THANK YOU CLUNK! KUDOS TO YOU! THIS IS THE BEST GUIDE EVER!!!
I'm A TOTAL NOOB, never oc'd ever, and none of the guides i found online was as informative as this, and I followed your procedures and I achieved my first ever overclock!!! HOORAY lol.

I had an e4300 at 1.86ghz more than a year now.. and after i read your guide a week ago, it inspired me to pop the cherry on this little thing.
I went out got a name brand power supply & aftermarket cooler and started cranking with confidence!
But had 1 little problem, kind of stuck and unsure what should i do next, hopefully you can provide the next step!

hardware
-gigabyte p965 ds3 motherboard
-core 2 duo e4300
-asus arctic square cpu cooler
-corsair xms2 4x2gb pc6400 800mhz
-HIS HD4850 512mb Vid card
-ocz 700w psu

Followed every little detail,
and reached 3150mhz (350mhz x 9x multiplier).
Voltages at 1.4 Vcore, and 0.1+ MCH voltage
CPU TEMP 58 degrees at full load.

but I can't go any higher than that, every time i try 355mhz, 360mhz, 370mhz and save & exit, it reboots twice with no startup screen on first.. and cmos reset, so everything is back to stock.
I've tried uping the voltages but didn't work.
Have i reached the max? or is there some way I can go even higher>>?
I wanted to reach 3.6ghz, am I asking too much?! heheh

Hello Welcome to the forum.
Please put your system specs in your profile, if you like use the guide in my sig.

What strap are you using for the the RAM? Make sure its on a 1:1 until you get the CPU up to its max stable frequency.

Im not sure if you can hit 400x9 on that combo, but i have seen results from awhile ago up to 3.7/3.8 but that was with bucket loads of vcore
You might need alot more vcore, but i wouldnt try much more than you are using now, maybe more NBv might help but im not familiar with your board.

Welcome to the forums

I'm glad the guide was useful to you. Please add your full system specs to your profile (see my sig) and then post all your BIOS settings.

965 boards are a bit of a finicky breed because there are chipset strap changed that can affect stability in certain parts of the FSB range.

It may just be as simple as you being in the "bad" part of the FSB range, or some other setting that needs looking at.

The other common problem that people seem to have is that they start off with their RAM set too high, so as they overclock the FSB, the RAM speed increases and of course, it starts to run out of steam very quickly.

Your RAM should be set to the lowest it'll go to for this exercise, so 266/533 should be right for your set up.

Anyway, post your BIOS settings and we can go from there

Edit: That other monkey beat me to it

You should set your primary memory timings to 5-5-5-18, as soon as you'll increase the FSB having them set to 4-4-4-12 may cause instability and failure to boot.
After you have reached a CPU overclock you are satisfied with you can then proceed to overclock the memory and tweak the timings.
