Unfortunately, it looks like one or more of your components are holding you back. You don't say what type of PSU it is, so I've no idea there, the system specs need updating really![]()

There is something you can try, the 965 chipset's FSB was full of "holes", try running your multi at one lower that it should be and going for 380 FSB with 1.5v NB voltage.
Other than that though, I do suspect your board is the problem.
I tried both your suggestions separately and together, and nothing worked. I noticed one thing in the bios that might explain this. I noticed that in the CPU menu, it said FSB speed 1066 mhz. That corresponds to the maximum FSB speed in the specs for my motherboard. I'm guessing that might be the problem, although I'm not exactly an expert![]()
hello,
sorry to post yet another question im sure is covered under your guide or else where. BUT i was more or less inquiring to find out, what would be a ballpark suggestion on novice OCing my current rig from 2.40ghz to 3.2?
my specs under CPU-Z are as listed.

i dont remember upgrading my BIOs as asus has THE BEST support driver site on the plant..-facepalm-
bascily everything but CPU heatsink is stock, the sink i got from a friend i forget the exact type but its a Zalman CNPS7700-Cu or something very similer to that model, and my PSU is a 400w PF400 brand. (this is my case the PSU is the stock that comes with it."NZXT trinity")
im ideally going for AIR cooling, as my case has 1 120mm and 3 80mm fans currently using CoreTemp i read at 40-47*c so temp seems ok for now. i think i have a rough idea on what exactly to do, but rather get a more experianced idea before i start tweeking my system further.
if you need any other info let me know and ill scroung it up.. system is about 2yrs old give or take
thankyou for your time and any assistance.

Welcome to the forums
If I remember correctly, the P5B-VM boards do not overclock very well. I'm guessing you haven't tried the guide? That would be my starting point as it walks you through everything.
i have read though the guide and downloaded the cpu-z and cpu-temp programs but i havent tried overclocking yet, as im not sure if i should look in to ocing the ram as well as the cpu or if i can get decent speed/oc out of just boosting the cpu.
last thing i want to do is oc my system and make it go boom lol, i know q6600's can go pretty high ocing from the few OC sites i have read just not sure what is ideal for me![]()
Overclocking the RAM is fine, but leave it until you are done with the CPU.
Try to keep the RAM on the lowest strap to begin with, to avoid having to check it when reaching your max stable CPU frequency.
PC:
ASUS RIIE // Intel i7 920 D0 4.4Ghz 1.375v //
OCZ Reaper 1800 C8 // Sapphire 5970 1Ghz x2 //
Intel X25-M G2 80GB RAID0 // BeQuiet DPP 1200w //
Seagate 500GB 32mb 7200 // LG BR //
Cooling:
TFC Monsta 6xSharkoon 1200rpm 140mm //
HWL GTX480 4xScythe Ultra Kaze 2000rpm //
EK Supreme LT // EK FC-5970 // XSPC RS120 //
Laing DDC1 3.2 x2 // XSPC Res-tops // KL QDCs
hmm i tried OCing but my system wouldnt boot. said overclock failed and forced me to reset my settings.
i can run at 266/533 which i believe is my base specs but trying to run at 300/533 or 300/667 it failed. i tried doing 332 but that didnt work at 667 either. if my memory is right my 6400 ram is 800mhz max i think so i dont think i can really push above 800 too well with it.
weird thing is when i did 266/533 my ram speed droped from 5/5/5/15 to 4/4/4/12 or so not really sure if i should manually make them all 5's or not.
i also set the cpu multi to 9 (which its set to automatically) should i try toning that down to like x8 or something?
im not really after a godly fast system just wanting a decent 3.2ghz out of it
-had to put my system to basic settings again to boot lol...-
