Default WD Goes Full Bore With 300GB VelociRaptor

DailyTech - Western Digital Goes Full Bore With 300GB VelociRaptor
Brandon Hill (Blog) - April 21, 2008 8:35 AM

Quote:
Western Digital takes the fight to SSDs with next generation VelociRaptor

With all of the talk these days in the storage industry swirling around solid-state drives (SSDs), it's easy to forget that advances are being made in the hard disk drive (HDD) market as well for consumers. That fact is even more pertinent today with the announcement of the long-awaited update to Western Digital's line of 10,000 RPM Raptor HDDs: the 300 GB VelociRaptor.

The new VelociRaptor takes an untraditional approach for a desktop HDD with its 2.5" drive design. The 2.5" form factor allows the drive to be smaller, lighter, and more power efficient than its 3.5" rivals.

i have a pair of the 1st lot of these but for the price i wouldnt buy em again. nice to seem WD putting faster stuff out though considering how much of a factor platter density plays these days

come to think of it i also have a pair of 15k drives with a U320 controller but no pcix slot, wish i could find a use for them.

Aside from price, the thing that would put me off slightly is the noise. Hopefully, they will have found a way of silencing them, my 74GB Raptor can be really noisy if it's positioned wrong.

I'm keen to see what kind of speed increase there is though

Suggested retail price is around £250 from what I've seen touted. So initial price when they hit the shelves in May will be around the £320 mark.

Legit Reviews - Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB SATA Hard Drive - Western Digital - The VelociRaptor Arrives

PC Perspective - Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB WD3000GLFS Review - Evolution

You'll have to do with those two reviews until then.

They look pretty impressive all round from those initial findings.

Does look pretty good. But £250???? Would anyone actually pay that? Considering a 1TB drive is around £120 for a decent one?? Hmmmmm......
