We have the first pics of DFI's new Nehalem / Core i7 motherboard.

Specs.

  • Intel X58 + ICH10R(Socket 1366)
  • FSB 133MHz
  • DDR3 1333MHz
  • 40 Lanes PCIE (16/8/8/4)
  • 8 phase digital server PWM system
  • Extra 2 phase PWM for for DRAM/ 1 phase for North bridge/ 1 phase for Vtt
  • Heat-pipe cooling system with Flame Freezer module
  • Debug LED
  • Advanced Power/ Reset button
  • Replaceable CMOS design
  • ABS technology ready!

I think the high-end Asus X58s are 16 phase aren't they? Though if DFI says it only needs 8 phase PWM I'm inclined to believe them.

Personally, I don't think the amount of "phases" makes much difference to the end user, you only have to look at the JR which is a 4 phase MATX board and that's almost hitting 700FSB

It's more how the power circuit is designed and implemented. And the Asus 16 phase design is misleading. While to the board there appears 16 phases because of phase shifting and a couple of other clever ideas the FETs are being driven by an 8 phase controller.

Indeed, the DKs were exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote that..... yet Asus still advertise it as a selling point....

I'm not sure how final this pic is, but the cooling certainly looks interesting. Does it look like a Japanese theme to anyone else? hard to tell from the pic

Should have some more official pics in the next few days.

It's a nice looking mobo. One thing concerns me though, the 2 caps nearest the cpu socket. If they were not there it would make insulating for phase very much easier.
