Just dropped in as it were, or should I say stopped lurking ...
Just doing an upgrade and used these forums as a source of info to help make a few selections i.e. Motherboard etc .... as with all projects the budget has been blown big time.
I'm not new to overclocking - well perhaps I am compared to you guys but I only really tinker, I never really go after that last MHz ... I decided I'd like to change that and to understand more about the many facets of overclocking.
To this end I have optained a whole bunch of XSPC rads, various fans, cooling blocks, E6850 CPU, Asus Maximus Extreme, 2Gb OCZ Platinum DDR3 (7,7,7,20 timings) - Asus manual recommends a maximum of 3Gb when using XP as an OS in the manual - I will be in hell before I will use Vista.
I currently run two systems
One is an Abit AW8-Max with a Pentium D950 running at 3870MHz, using that for background heat in the dining room downstairs, it presently only has air cooling but it was once water cooled (Koolance Exos 1) but the mosfets still demanded a fan, we moved house so the water was dismantled never to be used again, a Zalman CNPS7500-Cu was fitted instead, there is only an nvidia 7300GT installed since this machine isn't intended for local users. This is in a Thermaltake Armor case fitted with the 220mm fan in the sidedoor, an extra hard drive cage up front and 2Tb of
SATA hard drives (I use it to stream media to the Xbox too).
The other system is a pretty stock P5N32E-Sli (nforce 680i) with an E660 running at 2750MHz, this has the Coolermax Eclipse fitted, contains 4Gb of Crusair Dominator PC2-8500 C5 running stock with a dominator coolair set of fans on it's head. The graphics is provided by an nvidia 8800GTX, 1 Tb of
SATA drives, all this is in an Antec 900 case.
The Abit and P950 is getting retired - sick of the heat it kicks out, it will be replaced with the P5N32E rig, I am building a new rig into the Thermaltake armor case that will be Asus Maximus Extreme (fusion block version) with the E6850 and water cooled, the 8800GTX will also move into the Armor case and will also be water cooled. I suppose I could have waited for the x48 but I'm not that keen on stuff straight out of the gate - I also use this rig for work so I can't afford 'unreliable' ....
Not much more to say really except hi all ... amd thanks for the input you never realised you gave ... especially Clunk ....
