Default asus maximus formula x38 + e8400 overclocking

Hi, guys i'am pretty new to overclocking, i've done it before (once) and i learned a lot about it. so you feel free to write "1337" words

well i still have the stock cooler on my e8400 and i tried to up the fsp to 400 which makes it 3.6Ghz (mp: x9) i loosent the dram timings (5-5-5-12) locked the pic-e to 100mhz
(although i don't know what it exactly does, but i read on a guide that it's preferabble.)
i didn't up any voltages at all (locked ram at 2.1v (should be between 2.0/2.2)).

it booted to windows (the pc made a strange grinding low noise) dont know what! , and i tried to run 3dmark06
it went pretty well until cpu-test 1 came along and the pc crashed (black screen)
i quickly went to bios to check cpu temps and it was 81 degrees celsius (not good :S)!

ive read on the inet that lot's of other people oc'ed it to 3.6 without increasing voltages or loosen timings at all so what could it be? maybe psu?! since the sound seemed to come from the top of the case? any thoughts would be very much appreciated!

thnx.. Leftie

Firstly, you need to build up to 3.6GHz slowly, so you can see where your overclock fails. There are known issues with the temp sensor on that chip, see this thread for more info:

Also I would consider getting an after market cooler if you can afford it, as anything pretty much will perform better than the stock Intel jobbie.... not sure what that strange grinding noise was though....? Have you checked all your fans to make sure they are spinning, etc? Have you been able to replicate the noise?

Don't know anything about that PSU, 350W seems low for that gfx card and setup, but it could be okay if it provides enough amps.... which power supply have you ordered and when will you have it?
