Default Kit's X58 Adventure

I've already got a thread going at DFI Club on this, but i thought i'd start one here as well.
If i find things i really don't like, i feel i'm more at liberty to say so here without much chance of collecting a ban

Anyway, the rig will consist of the following:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz
DFI Lan Party LP UT X58-T3eH8 Intel X58
OCZ Reaper 6GB (3 X 2GB) DDR3 PC3-14400 (1800MHz) Tri-Channel (OCZ3RPR1800LV6GK)
2x Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache Raid0
PCP&P Turbocool 1KW
ATI 4870x2 (plus a possible 4870 1gb in Tri-Fire)
Mach2 GT/Chilly1 Evap/Desuperheater

I'm still waiting on the Raptors and some Eraser putty (for around the socket).

So, got myself busy last night and started striping the cooling off.
First thing i found shocked me i must say, just have a look at the pic below.
Well out of order for a mobo that cost as much as this. No wonder all you peeps have been moaning about NB temps, all i can say is take it off and re-do it.

Obviously i took the rest off as well, as it happens the rest were seated fine. I re-did it all with Ceramique and re-assemble.

Next up was to get the socket area well coated with Liquid Tape. For those of you that don't know what the hell i'm on about, the area around the socket needs to be protected from condensation when your running under phase. Liquid Tape is inert and non conductive and water repelant, ideal for the job. it can also just be peeled off when it comes time to sell the mobo. Looks ugly as sin, but who cares, it's not like i'm going to sit here looking at it all day

That's as far as i've got at the moment. I forgot to order some eraser putty until this morning, once it arrives i'll post up some more pics. I've also got to drill some holes in the right place on the Evap clamp for this new socket and may well have to make a new back plate for the back of the mobo.

Hopefully i may be up and running by the weekend, if the drives and eraser get here in time.

FPO is 3836B241.

I can't find much info on what peeps are getting with it (damn XS being down still ). But the 37B's seem to be fairly good-uns. Truth is of course, i won't know until it's running.

Great stuff mate, will be keeping an eye on this.

I'm interested in the liquid tape - Don't you use any neoprene, or do you just use that instead of grease?

I may join you soon with my phase unit, I've just got a few things to finish off and i should have a few days free

No i don't use neoprene anymore Dave. Kneaded Eraser all around the cpu socket. I don't use grease either, i never have. As long as everything is completely airtight once the eveap goes on, there is no need for grease.

If you've never seen kneaded eraser used before, once i get some pics up you'll wonder why we did'nt use it years ago.

I've often wondered about the putty/eraser stuff, yes, I'd like to see some pics of that when you are doing it if you can?

The first time I set it all up I used vaseline on the board worked well, but what a pig to remove. Just been using dry neoprene and a bit of ceramique round the open parts of the socket as that's easy to remove.

So the putty stuff doesn't leave anything behind when you remove it?

I've just realised that I've used the words "pig" and "vaseline" in the same sentence. I'll bet even kinnsy can't do that

Ok folks. I've got a real big problem here, and at the moment i can't find a way around it.
I have 3x2gb of ram in the green slots, which should put it in triple channel. But Cpuz and Everest tell me that that the ram is in Dual channel.

After pm'ing Praz, BD and Clunk, the consensus is that it should just work in triple channel.
Praz said that the only times he's herd of it not working, is if the cpu is faulty or there's a bent pin in the cpu socket.
I've had the rig apart today and checked the socket, and all the pins are fine, not a bent one anywhere.
I would have thought that if it was the cpu, it would work as it should, or not at all.

Anyone got any other ideas or thoughts on this. I have changed all the ram sticks around as well, still the same.
Cpuz and Everest are showing 6144 MBytes of ram, which is correct, and says to me that all the ram is working.
