Default Overclocking E6850

Hi,

I am very new to overclocking and yesterday i managed to takes my system from 3Ghz to a staggering 3.1. Later on i found out this is because changing the FSB also speeds up the ram, and it was the ram which was diing.

Quickly: My system is a P35C-DS3R mobo e6850 3GHz dual core cpu with 2GB of DDR2(1066?) RAM.

So, i have changed my bios so that the FSB/DRAM is 1:1. My ram runs at 1066 or 533 in CPUz.

Now in order for me to eachive 1066 i now need a FSB of 533, which would push my cpu up to:

*9 = 4797
*8 = 4264
*7 = 3808
*6 = 3198Ghz

Im trying to get my cpu to around 3.4/3.6 but i want my ram running to its full potential also. Does reducing the RAM by chaning it to 1:1 have a more detremental effect than the positive effects of increase cpu speed?

SO. i was going to change my RAM multiplyer (sorry i dont know the correct terms) from 2.0(1:1) to 2.4 which i calculate would give.
1066/2.4=444.167FSB for max memory speed.

This will then give the CPU ranges with their multiplyer of:
*9 = 3997
*8 = 3553
*7 = 3109GHz.

This setup seems to be about the best by reducing the multipler of the FSB/CPU to *8, and the Ram to 2.4. using a FSB of 444/445 (originally 333).

As i said i know nothing. What are the effects of pushing the FSB to these massive levels? Is it best to keep the fsb as low as possible, use *9 and put up with ram running slowly?

I have no cooling, and only plan on getting a batter HSF no liquid cooling. On 3.4Ghz my computer reached 66dec C under the vista stress test, and it was rising slowly. It also reached 66 running PRIME95.

Seriously i did my first overclock last night so everything i think i have learnt has been in the spen of a couple of hours, so i accept that everything i have wrote here may be utter bs.

Was hoping to get some guidance on the issue.

Furthermore. If my CPU is running at 66 and climbing slowly, would a better HSF be enough of a change to keep the heat below 60 when running at full whack? Should i be aiming for MAXIMUM of 60, i.e. it should be lower?

I got to 3.4 last night without increasing the vcore voltage, im unsure as to when i should change the voltage, i dont know the signs of too low voltage nor too high voltage. Ideally i would like to leave the voltage on auto.

Once these questions are answered i would like to learn all about this 4-4-4-12 RAM stuff that i have no idea about. And perhaps GPU overclocking. (HD3870)

Welcome to the forums

You need to put your system specs in your "extra options" in your profile, and then go and get a BIOS template for your board, and post all your BIOS settings

ok. i have updated my extra options.

i cannot find a BIOS Template tho..

giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/Manual_Model.aspx?ProductID=2749]GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - Manual - GA-P35C-DS3R (rev. 2.1)
this is my mo bo. Where can i get them from or is it something i have to make?

Im pretty gutted my mobo doesnt have dual pcie slots. i didnt think i would need them when i bought it a month ago. Now im thinking i probably do..

ww.clunk.org.uk/forums/1994-post6.html

this one pretty much matches my bios.

So do i manually set my memory frequency to run at maximum, after i have over clocked my FSB. Or is it best to leave it on default setting untill the memory speed is maxed at that particular CPU speed as suggested above?

Further more. Im going to be going from 3.0 to 3.6 so what cooling would you recommend? Would a 35quid HSF do the job or would it have to be water cooled for around 90quid?

Have a read of my overclocking guide for beginners, click the link in my sig

Some of the settings will be different, but it will answer a lot of your questions.

You can get a good heatsink for less than that, have a look at the big scythes.
