Default E8500 BURNS OUT-fails at 70c "WHY???"

Hi...I have a Gigabyte x48t-dq6 ver 1.3, BIOS F6A, E8500, Latest Drivers, Fresh Install. OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1800 (with OCZ fans), RAID 0 2x WD VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS, Thermalright IFX-14 with HR-10 (dual fans installed), Dual NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440's

OCCT temperature at current settings: Idle 43c / CPU under 100% load will yield a max temp of 70c. Once OCCT hits 70c it stops testing. What have a done wrong?

I just wanted to OC my E8500 to 3.6GHz and OC the OCZ memory. Is there a brainiac in the house that can offer some suggestions?

Click on the settings button of OCCT, then on the monitoring tab, there you can manually set a max temperature.

In OCCT you need to set the threshold higher, thats all

Edit: Beaten by a stinking Giraffe again

WOW!!! THANKS for the FAST reply!!!!....so what should the max temp be set at? What is a safe temp for the E8500 with my settings? Can you also tell me if I can improve my memory settings?

I have my system set for shutdown should it reach 75C.
I don't think you should be getting to 70 with the TR IFX14, not with those settings at least. can you check the CPU temp (not the core temps)? I think it's more reliable.

to OC your system i would say:

You may need a little bit of vCore, and most likely a litle bit of vDIMM but i think you will get to stablility very easily.

Edit: maybe a touch of NB will be needed, but first try at stock.

I reseated the HS and the same thing is happening

what should the setting in the BIOS "Performance Enhance" be set at? Right now I have it set at Performance Enhance = [Extreme]

what program would you recomend for checking the CPU temp?

Just installed RealTemp...At Idle: Core Temp = 38, Distance to TJ Max = 56. I ran the OCCT test and RealTemp reported: Max Core Temp = 65, Distance to TJ Max 30

Mosty likely the DTS inside your cores are bad, but that's normal with 45nm parts.
Usually your motherboard's software will read the CPU temp from a different sensor wich gives more realistic readings in my opinion. If you don't want to use Gigabyte's utility, CPUID's HWMonitor works well for me.

So you think I destroyed the DTS? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO...Please tell me it could be a setting in the BIOS!!! I will download CPUID now and report back in a few

Any thoughts...Anyone?

Nono don't worry, it's just that Intel used new DTS sensors for the 45nm CPUs, and they are very very inaccurate until you get close to the CPU TJMax wich is 100C.
That's why when and if i'm checking the temps i look at the mainboard utility or HWMonitor, they show you also the CPU temp, it seems much more close to where the CPU really is (just -5-8C offset i think) and it seems decently accurate throughout the whole range.

What should the following be set at?

Performance Enhance = [Extrem] "What should this be set at?"
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) [4.00D] "What should this be set at?"
