Default Drive failure

Was in this site about an hour ago and all of a sudden machine froze!!. Use a caddy system ( don't like RAID )so popped another drive in , it was ok but basic drive with Norton which had run out. Had to load AVG temp as protection (got a couple of 'keys' left for Kaspersky 2007 but they seem to have released 2008 ver. so i'll have to hunt around for the 2007 thingie.. Looks like the my primary drive or caddy holder has gone faulty . Will try a reload of XP in the morning but suspect that maxtor has had it. Ere's a tip 'never keep any stuff on a drive that you are not prepared to lose ' (you always lose some stuff though.). Only got one drive on the other machine atm so I had better get a few caddies ordered for it as well . Take a 'disaster ' to spur me into action. (by ' disaster' I mean it will take me about 4 hours to reload all my crap). Never mind that's half the fun isn't it.

Even if you have your stuff backed up it's a ballache. Hope you get it sorted with minimum fuss mate.

Aye, it's a real pain when that happens, I had 4 Maxtors die last year and one of them died while I was backing it up, so I lost 160GB of stuff

I wouldn't use a Maxtor if I was given one.

It's true though. Only because I've had the same experience you have in recent years.

As far as I'm concerned they turned into Fujitsu years ago, when Fujitsu rolled out HDDs that had faulty thermistors that died instead of resetting at the correct maximum operating temperature. ....you were left scratching your head as to what was going on for the best part of 12 - 18 months (He says from bitter personal experience).

It's like everything to do with components, Flea. It comes down to batches and how many faulty batches slip through each manufacturers net and for how long and more importantly, frequency. If manufacturers start skimping on component quality to enable them to start pumping out greater volume of cheaper models then the inevitable happens as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure said manufacturers would justify component quality chosen to the hilt with all kinds of double speak though.

Yes the drive is faulty , it's not a caddy holder problem. Your right guys, Maxtor's can be iffy, i've had a couple of maxtor's die on me now. Had one that I formated and put an OP system on before going to bed one night , everything worked ok shut the machine down and it was dead on boot up in the morning .

Me either, had 2 that died a few weeks out of warranty, most likely bad luck I know, but............

The Seagate 500GB 32MB cache drives seem awful...... think they have lowered their own levels for what is an acceptable drive condition...... Had loads of them die, and even the refurbs they send aren't in pristine nick...... just a word of warning.
