Default Advice on memory.

Hey guys,

I have recenty tried to overclock my core2duo with limited success. The Batch number on the chip is L624A602 and from what i have read elsewhere the A's aren't good overclockers. I plan to get a q6600 (slacr) as i have read that they are good for over clocking; the scan website says they will easilly do 3.3gig with the right mem, mobo and cooler.
I have a freezer 7 cooler and currently have 2 gig of corsair xms2 6400 cas 4 memory. What memeory would you guys recommend? I'm thinking 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2 Dominator, PC2-8500(1066) or maybe some OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8000C5 1000MHz ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPX10004GK).

in the future I plan to get some water cooling going on and giving the quadcore a more serious overclock, which of those memories would better server my purpose??? The corsair would be more convenient as i will be close enough to scan to walk in the trade counter and buy the bits next weekend (cpu and mem). If the reaper is a better choice I would have to goto overclockers and get it from there.

Any advice or experiences with either memories would be appreciated.

G

Hello, Welcome to the forums.
Please update your profile to include your current system specs. http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/forum...r-profile.html

I use the same RAM you mention but we'll come back to that,

You will find the Q6600 a great chip, the Q6700 is down in price now too and has a higher multi.

The only concern i have without knowing the rest of your specs is with the F7Pro, you will find the quads put out a lot more heat and perhaps an OCZ Vendetta, Xigmatek S1283, TRUE or Sunbeam Tech Core Contact might be a better choice.

We can help with RAM when you get your profile updated

These are the best ddr2 kit you can buy:
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-9200C5 1150MHz Flex II Passive/WaterCooled Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2FXT11504GK)
Second best in my opinion is the Mushkin 2x2GB XP2-8500 w Ascent heatsinks.
Out of those two i would pick Corsair.

High frequency without extreme voltage and excellent cooling.

wow, fast replies.

I have updated my specs.

I'm not too concearned about major oveclocking at the moment as I plan to get a water cooling setup in the next 6 months. My primary concearn is getting a little more speed (along with 2 more cores) and some decent memory ready for my mobo upgrade and watercooling setup further down the line.
I plan to get an asus board with a second pcie slot so i can have a second card to drive my old 17in lcd and give me a little more "desktop" space. I did have it running on the 2nd port on the 8800, but it slowed the card down when running hungry games (*cough* crysis *cough* FSX *cough*) so I figure that can wait 'till I have a mobo to drop a cheap second card into (or maybe my old 7900).

I just need advice on which memory would be "better" for my future plans.

Is the q6700 as "tweakable" as the q6600 slacr's?

If you are planning on a new board can you let us know which one you are planning on? It might be useful when choosing memory, some boards like some types of RAM more than others.

The Q6700 is the same core as the Q6600 it just has a higher multi which makes reaching higher overclocks a little easier as you are less dependant on high FSB, so if anything it allows more play when clocking - it is slightly more expensive though

If you were to buy a Q6600 they will mostly do 3.2-3.6Ghz easily eneough and the RAM you have should let you get to 3.6Ghz(400x9) as you stand. So i am not worried about your existing RAM right now for pairing with a Q6600/6700. If fact the RAM you have is so godd that if you were to relax the timings down from C4 to C5 it will prolly do 900mhz msybe a bit more with the right volts and cooling

But i would seriously think about a different cooler if you plan to take the Q6600 over 3.2/3.4Ghz as the heat will increase.

Slightly more expensive, it is 50% more expensive the q6600 is £117 and the q6700 is £153. If you think my current memory is the best choice I can save the money from that to put towards the 6700.

I think the board im looking at will be one of the P5Q boards (iP45 chipset) but I like the look of some of the Republic of gamers boards although they are really expensive, I guess advice from you guys maybe steer me in the right direction.

Would it no be benficial to get 1066 memory as opposed to 800 or am i showing my ignorance.

With regard to the cooling, i really dont plan to overclock by much until i get a watercooling setup (maybe 6 months time) so I wont push the temps so i can stick with my freezer 7 for a while.

If you want to overclock your quad and do Crossfire i recommend the Asus Rampage Formula.
If you can skip the Crossfire then the Asus P5Q(either Deluxe,-E,or Pro) is a very good board.
