Default CPU Bottleneck?

I have a home built PC with following specs:

MOBO Asus P5N32 SLi Premium
CPU Pentium D830
GPU Asus EN8800GT
RAM GEil DDR2 667 2GB in dual channel mode
PSU Hiper around 800W
Case Thermaltake Xaser 3

I enjoy playing flight sim x with a lot of add ons and believe my current bottleneck might be my CPU. I have tinkered with overclocking but have not progressed very far until I know a bit more about it.

Any ideas on my best options for improving performance? CPU change?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums

Absolutely, get a new CPU, you are a couple of generations behind with your current one.

You don't say how much you have to spend, but if you can stretch to it, a Q6600 should be a good buy

I know it likes C2D. Does it support Quad?

Thanks for the replies...

I've checked the ASUS website for compatible CPU's, and there doesn't seem much in the form of high performance units. I have the latest MoBo BIOS which I believe addresses newer CPU's.

Would the new E8400 do the job?

Thanks

I have a friend who is into flight sims. He too plays Flight Sim X. He had a problem where he would get a juddering effect whilst in play. He changed his cpu to a E6750 and now no more juddering.

So an E8400 I would imagine would be even better.

The new E8400 will do the job, but even a E6850 should be enough..
BTW check MS site for updates, the new patch should bring HUGE performance improvements.

Personally, I would go for the G0 over the E8400, much more power and cheaper at the moment too.

Thyanks again...Beowulf, this is exactly what's happening. I can play for about an hour no probs, but then game starts cracking up. I have SP1 on Flight Sim X, so have all latest patches.

Clunk - sorry, what is G0?

I would like something that is fairly future proof (Ha Ha!), so don't mind paying a few bucks (but not stupid prices) for something decent. My board supports up to 1066Mhz FSB.

Regards

Q6600 G0 - G0 is the stepping ie, B3 was the older stepping.

I'd go G0 for what it's worth, great value at the moment and more than do what you need. Just re-double check that that latest BIOS supports them, like you said, you should be fine. Won't kill you to take another look though.
