Default Need to sort this...

I have an extremely annoying issue. I've asked on here before but I've never solved it.

Basically I've just extracted a 8.3gb file from my 320 drive to my windows drive. During this my PC came to a crawl. The mouse would pause, applications would just stick (no errors, just extreme lag).

It's really annoying and I have no idea if this is normal.

System:

Gigabyte DS3 965P
Q6600 @ 3200mhz
2*2gb Corsair 6400
XFI
8800GTX
250gb
320gb*2
Windows Vista X64 SP1 (had the issue on XP as well)

Someone on OCUK said that they had the same issue with a Gigabyte board and just moved sata connections. I cannot do this as the Jmicron ports are buggy and I've filled the ICH8 slots. Would getting a SATA addin card help or should I just buy a new board?

If the advice is buy a new board, which one? I want to OC the Q6600 to atleast 3.2ghz.

Plenty of moans and groans about Vista file copying, Robert. I would wait till you've installed Vista SP1 and given that a try before you start looking to anything else.

Mark's Blog : Inside Vista SP1 File Copy Improvements

If you're desperate you can get the final SP1 now from MS update using a batch file, but it comes without an installer and they are putting the finishing touches to it regarding potential driver conflict. I've used it on a few machines so far and they have been fine.

It cleared two problematic laptops up which were officially classed as "Vista crap" (slow as hell) by me and I've had no ill effects installing it on a new Vostro 1000, which had no problems.

The last release candidate of SP1 sorted a few issues out for me on both the laptop and main PC, but I still get the feeling that the problems are still there, just better disguised.

It's worth a go though

Bleh...I said in my OP that it happens on XP as well.

So just to clarify - happens in XP and Vista and Vista SP1. Some guy said he had the same issue and to cure it he simply moved his hard drives to different ports.

I don't have that luxury as the Jmicron controller is awful and I've filled the ICH8 controller.

Right, you never said you'd gone SP1.

While we're here, care to elaborate on that a little.

On what exactly? Me moving my private files about?

If you really want to know what it is - it's a backup of BF2/WOW/Obvlivion/NFS/Quake/Crysis/BF2142/Warhammer/Company of Heroes/COD4 and Rome total war patches.

Sorry...if you think I was being funny in my previous point I wasn't. I was just saying that I had already posted that

I couldn't care less about what files you have on there, I was more interested in the word extract from and to.
