Default Core i7 using Gigabyte board

Here's a wee review that I came across,of the new platform using the gigabyte x58 extreme board. Interesting but seems an awful price ATM for the oc's that are being achieved ? . Comments ?

A nice review and looks like a nice board too.... not sure the huge heat-pipe assembly is necessary, but anyway.....

The prices are very high at the moment, and as you say it is questionable as to whether or not these high end boards bring much other than some fancy features... give it a few months for people to play with them and I'm sure it will become clearer. I saw a living review that Coolaler was doing, I'll see if I can dig it up........

Detailed review, but weird that 965 only managed 3.8Ghz. I have seen reviews of 920s at 4Ghz+

Early BIOS maybe? Either way it is a lot of money to spend.

For games and such i would expect C2D to hold its own for a decent stretch yet, anything multi-threaded should really fly with these from what ive seen so far though.

Depends what you want to use them for.

£300 Mobo+ £850 CPU+ £300+ RAM makes me feel ill, but maybe a 920@£200 + DFI/EVGA X58@£200 +6GB@£200 = much more palatable and almost affordable for a new toy to play with.

Looking forward to seeing what our members come up with.

New year hopefully, i would expect a bit of a drop when more retailers have them instock. Competition is our friend.

I remember that when the C2D E6x50 came out, all the reviews had the E6750 and the E6850 at over 4GHz easily, reaching 500 FSB and more on air and little voltage increase.
Now i would like to see with how many off the shelf parts that is possible; same goes for Nehalm.

Intel cherry picking samples for review? They would do that would they? That might mislead consumers.

Your prolly right though, makes a mockery of reviewers authenticity in that case. You would wonder why they would bother with no AMD equivalent at the moment.

Aye that always happens, not only with CPUs, but everything.

Good news is that there are lots of posts out there reporting that retail i7 920s are capable of hitting 3.6-4.2 on air.

I was reading a few threads on XS, and a lot of those guys are managing these kinds of frequencies with a little perseverance.

Looks like a few boards will let you disable the 130w throttling limit as well.

I know there are no guarantees with high clocks, but it is encouraging to see so many folks pulling decent numbers on retail chips.

As i say, i am looking forward seeing what out members produce.
