Default Need help with DFI X48 UT T2R USB issue

Hi,

I recently got this board and so far its been great except for what seems to be some sort of instability related to the USB ports. Occasionally my USB mouse freezes in a game but when I unplug it and plug it back in it works fine, also the other day I turned on my monitor which has 4 USB ports and a card reader, and that caused the computer to restart. I have not yet tried overclocking but have run prime 95 on the board for more than 12 hours without errors on blend mode. My operating system is xp SP3. Also I have about 8-10 USB devices plugged in. 6 through the rear ports and 2-4 from the USB headers. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? My system is the following.

Case: Antec P160
mobo: DFI X-48 UT T2R
PSU: PC-Power and Cooling Silencer 750W
Hard Drives: 2*Hitachi deskstar 320GB in RAID 0 4 other smaller HD drives for backup all 7200RPM and SATA or SATA 2
Ram: 2*2GB G.Skill 4GBPQ PC 8000
Processor: Intel Q6600 CPU 2.4 Ghz
CPU cooler: Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Video Card: EVGA Geforce 8800GTS 640MB
North bridge cooler: Thermalright HR-05 SLI with 80mm fan
1 Fan controller
1*floppy drive
2*PATA optical drives
2*panaflow 120mm * 38mm fans
2*120mm*25mm case fans

One other thing I should mention is that when I bought the board it came in a box that had some of the components like the manual and floppy disk looking somewhat used although the board looked new so I'm a little concerned that maybe the retailer is trying to resell a board that they think is ok but before I return it I'd like to make sure that it is a hardware issue and not maybe a lack of power or some other issue. Most of this system is not new. The only new components are the mother board the processor, and the cpu heatsink. My previous board was an EVGA 680i A1 rev. with a e6400 processor. I did not have any of the issues I'm currently experiencing before.

Welcome to the forums

This could be a few things - Most likely a bad USB device, or driver issue.

I would start by removing as many of the USB devices as possible and using the PC until you get problems, that way you can isolate any duff devices.

Is the windows install a fresh one or is it carried over from the Nvidia board?

Hi, Clunk,

Thanks for the welcome. The Xp install is a new one. All drivers should be current, I also had a bsod before but I think that was caused by DFI's old marvell drivers. I got the latest ones from Marvell's site and I haven't had it since. I'll try unplugging USB devices. I do remember now that I think about it that some devices didn't play well on the 680i board when they were in the same set of rear USB ports. Maybe that could be the problem, although I never had mouse freezing with the 680i and I normally keep my mouse and keyboard next to each other in the top two rear USB ports and I've been doing the same with the T2R.

If you are using a hub, is the hub self powered? Is the power working on the hub? Using a lot of USB devices that are all draining power from the motherboard isn't a good idea.

What problems did you have on the 680? is it a USB bracket?...dodgy cable?, loose plug?

This may or may not have a bearing on your issue, but is something i noticed with the P35. Did you install the chipset drivers after you installed Windows ? The installation of the chipset drivers also installs Intel's USB drivers over the Windows USB drivers.

Ok I think I may have found the problem although I'm not sure yet... I realized I forgot to install drivers for an old USB scanner and webcam. I have now installed the drivers for them so I'm hoping it will fix the problem. For now I'll leave devices plugged in to see if the problem stops. I did patch xp up to SP3 prior to installing drivers other than the LAN drivers which I subsequently updated to the most recent drivers from marvell. All of my USB devices are plugged into the rear of the board except for 2 that are using a bracket and sometimes I might plug in one or two others at my case's front USB ports. My monitor has a 4 port USB hub and flash card reader. I believe that the hub would be powered by the monitor's power supply though I'm not sure. I don't have anything plugged into it though. The monitor is a Dell 2407WFP. The USB devices I currently have plugged in are a scanner, a printer, a mouse, a keyboard, a webcam, a SDHC flash card reader, monitor USB hub, and a PDA. I think everything except the keyboard, mouse, webcam and flash card reader have seperate power sources.

I believe that the problem was fixed by installing drivers for the scanner and webcam. I do not think I've since had any other problems. I just tried a quick overclock on my q6600 and have managed to get it up to 3.2Ghz stable running prime 95 for 24hrs but need help getting it further so I'll make a post in the overclocking forum. Thanks for your help guys!
