5.6 is fine for a single disk.

I wouldn't take too much notice of the Vista ratings, they are a big steaming pile of dung

But, if you have money to spend, there's always SSD drives or even a velociraptor.

Spinpoint F1 are very fast, but there were some reports of rapid failures... maybe a velociraptor is the best thing now, use it just for your most demanding tasks, you will be fine with a good 7200 RPM SATA unit for the rest of the stuff.
What do you need to speed up?

If you just want to use games, then i'd say go ahead and buy a 300 GB velociraptor, the space will be enough for plenty.
If you want to add storage space further down the line you can always add some bigger drives.

Maxtor have been good to me in the past but believe they've been bought out by Seagate. Seagate, I have no experience with but they have good batches and bad ones. I suppose it really boils down to tastes.

Have an old 74 gb Raptor...noisy little bugger, banging away as she does her stuff. Fortunately, I've found the 300gb Veloci raptors very silent so bought a second one. I'm a WD fan these days.

I play some of the most demanding games on a standard SATA 2 Hard drive. A 500G and a 320G Seagate and Samsung drives. I have absolutely NO issues playing anything at all on either drive and my drives are also in dying need of a De-fragment.

You will be fine with any drive for playing games. If you want to have a fantastic read speed and have MONEY TO BURN, get 2 Velociraptors and set them up in RAID.

This will give you bragging rights only and the normal human won't SEE A DIFFERENCE.

I have just finished Crysis and it was great.
