Default 4770 overclock problem

I got my 4770 a couple of days ago and I'm having problems getting it to overclock. With the overdrive utility it will go up to 810/850 which seems pretty minimal compared to a lot of oc results floating around. My problem is when I use rivatuner, even clocking 10Mhz up from stock on either core or mem I just get a blank or green screen and need to reset to get back into windows.

I'm new to gpu overclocking so I'm hoping it's just me doing something stupid! I'm using Xp x64 is there some problems with this OS maybe? I installed the x64 update for rivatuner so I thought it should be ok and did the config file edit to get the 4770 recognized. The card itself is the xfx 4770 with the dual slot cooler, temps don't seem to be the problem though as with the 810/850 overdrive OC and 50% constant fan it doesn't go above ~66degrees.

Any ideas?

Hi Clav,
Welcome to the forum.

Set the GFX RAM to its stock value and use Riva Tuner to increase the GPU clock to 815 and test for one/two mins with Furmark.

Then see how high the GPU will go.

Once this has been established try increasing the RAM frequency 5mhz at a time until it becomes unstable.

You may have a poor card, sadly its often the luck of the draw. Overclocking the GPU and RAM separately may yield better results.

Also, please add your system specs to your profile using the guide in my sig. This may help shed light on the issue.

hey thanks for the welcome

I tried overclocking with rivatuner before the overdrive utility. With rivatuner I can't raise the core or memory clocks above stock values without a green or blank screen. I only tried the overdrive after multiple failures with rivatuner, which is why I'm thinking there may be a problem with my software and/or OS set up. I'm really hoping that I don't have *the* 4770 that won't OC

Ok, then maybe abandon the RivaTuner idea.
Which drivers are you using 9.5?

Is yours the XFX 4770 non reference card? If so check that the VRMs are not overheating GPU-z or Everest should help with this.

Yes, I'm using the 9.5 drivers from ATI on a fresh install of XP x64

OK use GPUz and set the sensor to record the highest temps rather than the live temps and run what ever benchmark you are using. When its done GPUz will be displaying the highest temps. This might help to see what it happening, i could be the GPU temps are fine but memory or VRMs are getting too hot.

Other than that maybe use the ATI clock tool to see if you can go higher with it?

Ok thanks, I'll give that a go. I did try the ATI tool as well but that wouldn't change the clocks at all. How can I check if I have a non-reference card? All I know is that it has the full slot cooling solution instead of that gash looking thing I see in all the pics

edit: Had a thought, If temperature of anything is a problem then how come I can get a stable (small) overclock through overtune and not rivatuner?

It's ok that's the one I thought you meant. I did try it and got an error about not being able to set the clocks when I tried to change anything, can't remember the exact wording though.

Sry Clav,
I am running out of ideas, maybe Kelainefes will have something to suggest when he sees this.
