Default About ripping off stock mobo cooling..

Over on tweaktown there is an article about removing RAM heat spreaders by sticking them bagged up in the freezer then this make the thermal gunk easier to remove after the spreaders are pulled off. Has anyone any experience with doing this?

I was thinking it might make it easier to strip off the cooling on the new mobo and vga, but im not trying it with out doing some homework 1st.

Never needed to do anything as drastic as that.

If you remove the memory heatspreaders, in most cases, you remove any warranty at the same time.

On Ballistix, just grab the edge of the heatspreader with 4 fingertips and gently pull, moving along after each pull, and you will eventually feel it start to give.

Same for mobo cooling, only if it's an Asus, you might need to use something to lever the heatsink off.

I use the edge of a pair of angle nose pliers. Put a layer of insulation take on the board first in case of slippage and then work your way around the heatsink until it comes loose.

Ta, elbow grease it is then.

I wont remove the heatspreaders from the dominators i bought since they came with the compatible fan module thing. I was just thinking about the LT and the 4850, which is an ASUS one come to think of it.

I got ripped off for £10.50 in maplin for a can of IPA, it will just have to do.

Not elbow grease, gentle persuasion

On GPUs they arent usually stuck on, usually those thick pads.

If it does have those pads, get a bit of plastic and lever them of without mis-shaping them, and that way, you can put them back on for RMA or re-sale

I dunno about Asus video cards, but my HD3870 from Sapphire has some standard goo on the GPU and a chewing-gum like pad on the memory and power regulation chips.
No problems whatsoever, if you put the card on your desk and lift by the cooler it will come off.
Same for the SB cooler on the DFI board, and the PWM stuff i wouldn't know how it is when new, but after a month of usage or so mine came off easy.
