Default Xigmatek S1284 first impression.

So I finally got this and finally got the time to do some testing. A lot has been said about this cooler and how it fails to impress. So I decided to try it out myself.

Here are few pics.

The issues. Well there is clear visible problem as soon as you open this. The base.....

Its huge contact area. the addition of 4th heatpipe has actually made the contact area soo big, that its too big for todays C2D. It actually runs out of the chip slightly. This means that all heatpipe contact area is not making contact with the heat producing part of the chip.

I immediately though, oh bugger, this is gonna be bad.
Moved to installation. Again, the push pins are not great. The amount of force you need to get them through is enormous. Dont even think of installing this inside the cabinet. Remove the motherboard and then install or you will end up breaking the board. Much greater amount of force was needed than stock hsf even when this is exactly same mechanism.
They should have had the bolt through mechanism as standard to be honest.

Anyways, installed this and fired up the machine, went to the bios. And bonkers, E7200 was reporting temp of 46C in bios. Bad mount. Checked and found one of the legs has come loose. Installed it again and fired it up. Everything was nice.

Booted the pc at 4.1G at usual settings.
At this speed, the TRUE was giving delta of 22-23°C with sflex fan. I expected this to do lot worse.

And to my surprise this was giving the delta of 20-21°C with stock fan. This is with orthos small fft running and temps after 30 mins with stock fan.
The main problem is to get the damn mount properly as its really hard. And trust me on this that you can easily screw it all up. I know they are working on revision of this cooler because of this flaw. but honestly its not bad. But mounting would have been lot less painful with good old backplate bolt through mechanism. This is absolutely horrid. Basically the locks tend to come loose if you dont apply enough pressure.

And it looks cool inside the case :P

More testing on quads coming soon next week.

Nice write up, thanks for sharing

I agree about those plastic pushpins, they are terrible on a big cooler like that, but I think there is a bolt through kit available for those for around £5UKP.

Great stuff thanks Funky , I got the Xigmatek HDT S1283 CPU Cooler as 1284 wasn't out yet. Must admit i didn't even bother with the push pins I hate them. The thermalright push pin needs modding before it can be used. it was only test 3 that got decent results. xigmatek are doing their own kits but again not seen any in shops.
Look forward to seeing your tests , looking good so far

Nice looking case , what is it ??

its good old coolermaster CM690 with side panel mod. Also inside is painted black, basically thats done to avoid rust on the steel. I live near the sea so that was necessary . Waiting for some new fans to arrive in main to put them on side panel. Also getting bolt through kit from xigmatek which honestly should have been bundled.

I think it's a reasonable idea to have the bolt thru seperate. There are many who will be happy with the pins. More serious overclockers , or if you just hate those pins , can pay a bit extra & get the bolt thru. Even with the £ of the bolt thru they are well priced I think compared to the competition.
