Question Best CPU cooler & fan for Q6600 @ 3.0ghz?

Hi guys,

Can anyone share some wisdom & experience on what the best CPU cooler & fan is for an Intel Quad Q6600 o.c'd to 3ghz?

I was just gonna plump for the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro but I came across a set of reviews at Hexus showing that the Thermaltake BigTyp 120 VX is the best cooler and not much more in £'s either.

But they didnt use a Quad core but a straight P4 chip.

Please help if you can, any advice is welcome.

p.s I have a Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 motherboard.

Peace

Stock cooler might / will get you there for a short time, but don't expect consistent temperatures after any protracted period of time, especially with a quad, you're ultimately treading a fine line for a dead chip.

Any of the mid priced coolers will get you to a stable, long term 3.0 OC. Scythe Mine, Ninja, Tuniq Tower, etc. Thermalright Ultima-90 + fan would be my pick, for future proofing, value, size, performance.

Hey DM, what's the total budget you want to go up to?? that'll probably narrow things down even further

Hi GD,

Budget isnt a problem as I'll buy whatever fills my needs.

I'm trying to get something that'll be nice'n'cool and also keeping the noise to a minimum.

I'm in the process of buying parts for a completely new build that will hopefully last a couple of years or so

Peace

Thermalright Uktra 120 Extreme or Ultima90 would be my favourites. I used the Ultima90 to test the Abit IX38 QuadGT was very good although was out the case temp shown here 9x356, PWM Temps & the search for lower Vcore You can see coretemp log in the post.

luck

This should give you some food for thoughtingtons...

Scythe Miné with fan available from Scan Computers UK @ £23.49

Advantage of being 'clip on' (no farting around taking the Gigabyte base plate off).

AnandTech: Thermalright Ultima-90: Small Wonder? <-- Worth reading.

Thermalright Ultima-90i CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775) @ £24.66

Thermalright Ultima-90 from Scan Computers UK @ £23.49 Pre Order

Fans...

Noctua NF-S12 - 1200 RPM from Scan Computers UK @ £12.33 - very quiet.

Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan - 3 Pin @ £14.09 - very quiet.

Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E - 1200 RPM from Scan Computers UK @ £12.33 - less than a fart louder

Scythe S-FLEX 1200RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3/4 pin @ £12.91 - less than a fart louder

or

Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F - 1600 RPM from Scan Computers UK @ £12.33

Scythe S-FLEX 1600RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3/4 Pin @ £12.91

Bout the best for shifting air at sensible volumes. You could probably expect a 3.6 OC with the Ultima-90
