Hello all,
i bought a 4870x2 and i am in need of a aftermarket cooling solution for it, temps arent a big problem but the fan must be kept at min 40% during gaming and that is a bit noisy for my liking.
Are there coolers, ghetto mods for something like that?
I saw on another forum a Thermalright V2 and a HR03 on a single board.
Full cover water blocks are available for that card or as mentioned on this forum before for other cards some have strapped an 80mm fan over the air intake hole to blow extra air through the cards own heat sink.
Though a nice aftermarket air solution would be excellent for this card if one were to be manufactured.

I can tell you that i have never seen or heard of an aftermarket air cooling solution for the HD4870x2 (nothing ever came out for the HD3870x2 either).
A V2 and a HR03 are probably your best bet for air cooling, i have a V2 and it's excellent, and you don't need a tornado fan to get good performance, the HR03 GT is supposed to be even better.
There are full cover blocks on the market (or you could just buy 2 GPU blocks) if you wanna go the LC route (you need at least a good dual rad for the HD4870X2, but a triple is better).
Because i couldnt find anything cheap i dismantled the monster, applied Ceramique on the gpus and bought two small fans. This is like a small log of what i've did:
This was just a temporary attempt, and the results:
Stock cooling:
60C idle(27% fan speed)
min 60% fan speed for load so that it does not restart from overheating
Ghetto mod:
38C idle
71-72C load
But the fan mania passed and now i am again with the stock cooling and just one 140mm fan in front of the centrifugal stock fan.Btw,they are called Scythe KazeMaru,1900rpm,104.54CFM.

LOL, that's not a ghetto mod, that's gangstah!
I didn't think of it before, but you can install two Thermalright HR11 VGA Backside coolers on that card, given your temps you should definately see an improvement. Here's my review of the HR11.
