Did you need to save the drivers off the CD onto a diskette to use during VISTA’s installation, if so which drivers did you use and would a USB key work instead?.

Thanks!
Just put the driver on the USB and on the section " where you want to install windows" hit the "load driver" on the bottom section of screen then go to your USB (or Floppy) and select the appropriate driver.

Okies, first post here, very informative too. I need some advice regarding overclocking an e6600 with a gigabyte X38-DS5 and 2 x 2gb of ocz 6400 ram. It appears the system doen't want to go above 400mhz fsb. I can use an 8 multi with 400mhz or a 9 multi at about 370mhz, but any higher and the pc bombs out of orthos or hardlocks. I've also got a corsair HX620w so theres deffo sufficient grunt there with good case cooling and a noctua fan/cooler for the cpu. I know the bioses between the DQ6 and the DS5 are different, but there are similarities so I'm hoping that some one here give me a bit of advice regarding starting points with voltages/settings, multis, etc that should get me going to a higher overclock than I've got atm, 400 x 8. thats at 1.43125 Vcore with load temps in the 52c-53c area using orthos.
Cheers.

hi rainstel,
Welcome to the forum
can you post your bios setting please , maybe use Gigabyte GA X38 DQ6 as a start point & chop/add lines as needed.

We'll be able to help you better then. Is orthios failing on large or small ffts ??

luck

lokeey,

Have you tried enabling Loadline Calibration assuming that's now available in the your current bios. This helps reduce vdrop, It might sort your issues out.

Otherwise i've not seen a voltmod for this board, but there again i've not really been looking.
sorry.

luck

Just ensure you select AHCI access mode in bios before attempting the installation.

Your right you just need to enable the AHCI mode in the bios and then boot in vista...Vista will then install the drivers and reboot. You don't need to provide the drivers like you had to do with XP :-)

about my o'c with bios F8d I think I found the right ratio performance/voltage....
I'm hitting a wall at 3.52 - 8x442x (1.425-v1.45) , 2.66d :-) prime at 58-63C
If I drop the vcore it reboots a soon as I run small fft's (8k)...I'm getting ultra big huge vdroop !!!!
I set the GTLREF to Auto but the default was -3% I'm wondering what is the best for vdroop
(ballistix=really flexible memory by the way I was able to run them over 1200)

To be able to run it over 3.6 I need to increase the voltage like crazy..around 1.525+ (besause of droop when priming) and getting temps 70-75C+

That sounds like your spot on then.

Have you tried enabling Loadline Calibration assuming that's now available in the your current bios. That might reduce your droop & also enablr running on a slightly lower vcore which mat help your temps.

luck

Yes I tried but the default value is auto and I'm guessing it's ON since it runs slightly better then the old bios but I will make sure and force it.

What about the GTLREF ?

What are the Options Auto , Didsabled & Enabled ?? If so i'd try enabled.

I'd try the options found Zenoth found GTL Ref

Edit:
Added an extra section to the index post#1 , Tuning & Tweaking , Linking the recent posts on GTL Ref, FSB Overvoltage Control and TRD & Performance Enhance.

I think I found the prob. I replaced me psu recently with the corsair 620w jobbie and I reckon its supplying more stable voltages/current than my old 3 yr old enermax 485w psu which could possibly have been undervolting, so I had to set the FSB and MCH voltages higher when using the enermax. The Corsair was overvolting both of these components I think. I dropped these voltages to 0.1 volts each and now I'm stable while using "large in-place FFTs" whereas before orthos would bomb out after 2 mins. Obviously I'll have to check again, but its looking good.
